Yea, used motor oil, hydrolic oil, any flammable trash and cedars. Great time to clean out the barn really. I got a house sized burn pile from hurricane helene yet to burn. Waiting till about January to try to give the oak laps in it time to dry a little. Plenty of cedar in there. Will go up like a Griswald Christmas tree. Planning to have friends over, smoke cigars and just watch it go. This was a smaller one last year from another storm clean up.

Way to go Sadie. My first Deer rifle was a plain looking Remington .243. Sure wish I still had it.

Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
Finally got around to skinning this guy. Used a blow torch to roast the skin and membrane off after I cut the hide out, then scraped the char and hit it with some sand paper, hot water, soap and steel wool to clean everything. Way faster than boiling; just gotta get a board for it and hang it on the wall.

Deer pay it no mind and yes it attracts yotes. Had three chase a yearling by me at dusk dark last weekend. No shot though and you know how I like to fling lead at a yote. Also had a bomb squad call out to dispatch yet another skunk in the unbaited live trap at the woodshed. All went well, skunk was released unharmed but soon after met a hail of .22 slugs dead downwind at 15 yards. And surprise, surprise, another skunk in the live trap at the woodshed this evening. Bomb squad again tomorrow or as soon as it stops raining. Dammit

You can get the same results by just skinning, scraping and rubbing it with borax. No need to boil a just rack cut off the skull. I wouldn’t bring it straight in the house though, leave it in the garage and let it dry a little while.

I just remove all the skin and that patch of meat under the antlers and then sprinkle table salt on both sides of the skull. The natural mount is usually dry enough to bring in in a few days.

Question about deer jerky: I know in a perfect world, you'd slice some lean meat up and make jerky, but I'm moreso interested in using up some old ground meat I've got and pumping it through my jerky gun. When using ground (and having fat in the mix), do you find that the jerky spoils faster, or is it not really an issue at all when vacuum sealed with oxygen absorber packets? I'd imagine fat would grow mold easier (at room temp).

Would it be safe to say that ground jerky at room temp in a ziploc bag would last about a week or less, at room temp in a vacuum sealed bag w/ oxygen absorber would last about a month or less, and frozen in vacuum sealed bag w/ oxygen absorber would last pretty much indefinitely? I'd imagine general rule would be eat it within a week after thawing/opening.

Id vacuum seal and put it in freezer then anything you open put it in fridge. I wouldnt leave it out at room temp more than a couple days.

I agree with @wilcam47, I personally use back straps for jerky and everything else goes to the butcher shop for sausage and sticks.
