Long story as short as I can make it: my BIL is about as green as it gets with hunting (despite being in the family for almost 10 years, a family full of hunters, and married to my sister, who I would consider relatively seasoned in her own right) he and she have put two stands up on the property we hunt since they have been together, the first of which was a quad pod they put at the south end of a ~250 yard long field opposite a tripod that had been there a few years. While more oft than not, the wind is from the north and it blows your sent right back over the field from the quad, it is a covered stand so it does offer some protection from the elements, and occasionally the wind is better from that side and of the field, and it is a two seater so it's extra roomy and offers an elevated place for me to take my daughter. This most recent stand decision, is a real head scratcher, though. I have had a ladder stand at the top left dot for probably 12 years or so. He had a ladder near the top right corner of the Opening in this field on a trail that went north into the woods, and he thought it would be a good idea to move it to the top right dot... Like 25 yards from my ladder, facing north so you can't see the big field, and nothing has been trimmed to where you can see into the woods from that spot yet, so it literally just looks back to my ladder. So I moved my ladder across the field. It was a good excuse to get the Mrs in the woods and let my daughter explore a bit while we trimmed limbs Screenshot_20241226-063352.png IMG_20241225_150303_556.jpg https://youtube.com/shorts/mHFkcuZdzRE?feature=share

I’ve bolted some stuff to it *lists cool stuff here*
First deer. Like 12 or so, about 2004..
.270 ~85 yards. Driving logging roads, standing in jack firs. Jumped out of the pickup and ran back down the road a few yards, offhand shot. Through his left eye, all I could see was his head out the jack fir.

Now before we get on my Dad about letting me take such a shot, he had barely made it out of the truck and had yet to see the shot from my vantage point. Here’s why I didn’t hesitate, day prior on a walk in we had been glassing a 3x3 and made a play, got close, to about 100 on the edge of high meadow, go time!! the deer was looking back at us, my dad told me to “put it on the middle off his ass and shoot it” well given my height at the time, the chosen rest on a stump or something, and a small rise in the meadow, I could only see the deers head, I didn’t shoot. He busted us and we never saw him again, my dad of course was frustrated but did realize I couldn’t see as he instructed, the next opportunity I didn’t even wait for instruction. IMG_8137.jpg

Congrats on the first deer. Glad you've decided to take up hunting. It's a great relaxing sport, and fun too. I don't know what the hunting regs are where you live, but is a 30 round magazine for the AK legal. Not trying to cause a :crapstorm: but just wondering on the legality.

Thank you! Private land in Alabama so I’m good for any capacity magazine. Looks like in WMA there’s a 10 round limit though.

I've been getting the girls club every night on the upper camera.
Took a walk down below this morning and cut that bear track from last night.
I figured it was big from the size of the track.
Couple big yotes showed up as well..
I'll play around with them in a couple weeks.

Went to see my daughter in Dallas. We went to the Scheels store there. Had went to the same store in Nebraska when my son was there playing baseball. At the time I thought it was another Gander Mountain/ Bass Pro Shop. Might not be in business for long. The one in Dallas is unbelievable. A huge parking lot filled to capacity both days we were there. And when I say huge I mean like maybe 5 Acres or more. Maybe 10? Maybe this is the only one of their stores that is so popular? It was insane.
