Changed it slightly. Took out some material behind the antlers and on top. Same general shape

That's the real trick huh. When is the rut in your area? What type of terrain do you have in your area?

Rut starts mid/late-December and runs through late January. The terrain is slightly slightly hilly with some woods, with thick undergrowth.

Sounds like they should start movin all day pretty soon, calls should start working and scrape lines should start letting you now where the activity is

Get yourself some old deer horns and watch youtube "how to's" on rattling. Every year I shoot a nice buck from rattling. In my experience it works best at first light. As soon as you get in your tree stand start rattling, before its light. They will think your movement and racket getting in a stand is another deer. I would also focus on food areas. Depending on what state baiting can help but never a guarantee. I've only killed a couple bucks over a corn pile, doe's on the other hand...well its much easier. If baiting is not legal find where acorns are or agriculture fields (corn, soybeans, peanuts etc.). My last ditch effort in the last couple days of the season is to get close where a bedding area is and sit. ALWAYS play the wind as its dangerous and can mess up hunting for a few days. Just my .02 Happy hunting!

Looking at doing some deer hunting with a 300wsm. Curious what you guys would use for the scope? Or maybe just throw some iron sights on it. I have a redfield revenge scope on my .243 thats a 4-12x40 or 42.

But I can't decide for the 300. Any suggestions? Looking to spend less than 300, maybe a 3-14x would be better for longer range stuff? Not sure. What do you guys think/what set ups do you guys use for deer at medium-long range?

I personally like a 50mm objective lense if space allows; growing up i thought the few people that had them were full of crap, but i guarantee it adds 10 minutes to either side of the day in shoot ability.

This is what I had on my old Tikka T3 300 WSM. They’re cheap but they were goog. site in at 200 yards and the hashmarks are right on all the way out to 700. I could hold a five shot 6 inch group at 700 yards with this set up.

I have a 4-16x56 Leapers on a 300 win mag. Great scope for the price when they first came out (around $100) now I believe they are pushing $200 and have features like lluminated reticle, built in sunshade and they weight more. If I was buying a new scope for my 300 win mag I would get a vortex hog hunter. Growing up I always used bushnell 3-9x40's and scope of equal caliber. Now being able to afford "higher" end scopes (all under $300) I will only buy vortex and the objective must be 50mm or 56mm. The light transmission is fantastic on vortex scopes especially for the money.

Leupold Rifleman 4-12x 40mm is under $300 and would be a fine scope for that rifle. You get what you pay for with optics.

Do you have an app to map out the rubs, scrapes, trails, stands and such?

i don't but since you asked I just found Huntstand and am currently downloading it. it looks to have an arial view of property lines and allows you to plot points for cameras, stands, scrapes etc. I think it will also have moon phases and wind and weather projections

I second the recommendation for Leupold, but you should look at the VX line. You get lifetime warranty which is great for something that you'll keep the rest of your lifetime. Check pricing on Leupold Vx-3i on eBay, Opticsplanet, and Amazon.

I think you should absolutely buy the best scope you can afford. If you can find a VX-3i for $300, buy it! The Riflemans are covered for life as well, so not sure what that’s about.

I've been very happy with Hunt by onXmaps. There are a lot of interesting new layers they are coming out with to help you find the big buck. I didn't know this but apparently deer love the lush vegetation that pops up in old forest fire areas. You can also look at harvest stat layers and a bunch of other stuff that I haven't tried yet. But ya, mark way points, record tracks, see property lines and the property owner info, logging property info, public land info.

    I think it's $29/year to subscribe
