Had two button bucks come under the stand this evening, could've spit on them. My dad saw two nice 8 points but couldn't get a shot on either. Muzzleloader opens up Thursday and the weather is finally getting cold so hopefully they start moving.

On Saturday evening I passed on five doe. Two were mature and then three fawns. One was fixing to blow at me so she had the cross hairs on her, just didn't pull the trigger. I heard that if you shoot a doe who has fawns, the fawns won't move out of the area for years. Anyone have insight?

Went hunting yesterday evening too. Only heard a pack of coyotes.

Decent start to the season here in South Carolina. I'm new to the area so it has taken some time to scout out good public land options.

Thanks, came in at 155.4 lbs, some good venison just in time for a camping trip next week. My kid collects the euro mounts on 8 pointers and above. He is 6 years now, hoping to get him out this year if he can manage to be quiet for longer than 30 second intervals.

I know that fawns will stay around a while. Don’t know how long.

My preference is to not shoot Does with fawns. Now if a Does has yearlings without spots and they appear healthy enough to live on their own I will shoot.

I've read a deer lives and dies in 2-3 square miles of where they were born. If the fawns are this years babies they latch on to another doe nearby that has fawns. Then they usually heard up with them through. They are most likely without spots and almost all weaned off by now. Thats just what I see around here YMMV.;)

I've read similar, but I think it said roughly 5 square miles (which is the same difference, really). Barring radical habitat change (a housing development going in, clearcutting, etc) or an extreme lack of food they apparently don't tend to wander too far.

Yeah no fawns had spots and they were eating soybeans so they were all fair game.

Nice buddy. I just moved here too, but haven't even stepped in the woods yet. Gonna hunt my property in TN this year instead of messing with out here.
