Speaking of scopes on model 99’s Weaver made a set of scope rings back in the day that were called pivot mounts. If you can find a set for your 99 they are cool and yes when you click them over and back they still hold zero. Here’s some pics of them. It’s nice because you can click the scope off to the side when you’re in the brush and snapped it back on for those longer shots.

Holloman.....looks like you have the cartridge counter on your 99, correct?? Also, is your safety on the top - slides forward/ backward?? My safety is near the trigger/lever.....slides forward/backward. Not like the modern ones that go left/right.

Love my 99!!! Killed my first 3 bucks with it using the peep sight. I think if I end up not going to PA to deer hunt any more, I may remove the scope and re-install the peep. Only drawback would be the holes/screws from the scope mounting.

Little bit of a debate there, where I come from.

Killing the small buck prevents him from passing his small genes into that small doe. Killing the big buck prevents him from passing any more genes at all into any does, therefore taking away better chances of more, larger bucks.

Can't eat horns anyway :notsure: At least not without a lot of Tabasco.

From the eating meat aspect, an early or late season buck is much better than a full rut buck. They aren't living on pure test and adrenal glands at those times, they're actually eating and drinking more properly, and not moving as much as 10 miles/day. Talk to your local wildlife biologists.
This is all just my opinion and small amount of knowledge from friends, family, and county wildlife officers/scientists. I'll still drop a big bruiser if he walks in front of me Saturday :infantry:

good point, but that deer seems awfully young, if I saw him next year, with no progression, I would take it (that's if I didn't miss)

Still hard to manage public land hunting. While I most likely would pass on the young buck, a large mature doe would be much more meat and tastier. It doesnt necessarily mean hes never going to get to be a big racked buck. Many variables to include genetics, habitat, feed etc...many dont really start seeing good potential till they get to 3.5yr mark

To each their own...but if you shoot all the little bucks there will never be any big bucks. Age is number one factor for big bucks, then nutrition.

I also agree with this. Touchy subject and a lot of debate involved.
Mostly agree now, because KY decided to bundle all 4 deer tags into one permit ($35) either last year or this one. People must've had much better luck at filling the first 2 antlered and antlerless ($20), let alone the second 2 optional tags ($15/each), than me

Guess I should just start adopting the "if it's brown it's down" attitude.

I personally don’t care what people shoot. What I hate are the ones who shoot the first basket rack that comes along and then bitches because they don’t have any big bucks where they hunt.

Maybe, if you’re a meat hunter. No regrets if you want big bucks because he’ll be bigger next year. That’s what’s nice about shed hunting, sometimes you get to see which bucks survived.

I understand that, but if you WANT big bucks, you have to let the little ones go. What I really don’t understand is why guys pay several thousands of dollars to come to west central Illinois in hopes of killing a BIG one and shoot something like this. Why not just stay home and save your self a lot of money. If it’s the experience you want then go home empty handed. This deer MIGHT score 110. He’s from Pennsylvania and I know they have bigger deer than that one.C2614A6E-2861-4DA3-9CCC-61A6CFADC695.jpg
