thanks guys! He had some fat and lots of meat! Here is the blurb if you’re up for a good hunting story!

“Got it done in 27 opening day!

I read and was told to hunt the flats.. so what do I do? I climbed the mountains. Went over peak 1, peak 2, peak 3, on the way to a tank on my map. Before veering right I decided to glass to the left of the flats.. What do you know? There they were! Group of 7 bucks browsing around.

About 2 miles away I busted my butt getting down the mountain. The wind was blowing from South to North while they were moving South so could not get in front of them. Stayed perpendicular to them. Got within 300 yards and glassed them up a little more. There were two big guys - this one and another with a few smaller ones. I didn't care, I was waiting for one to give me a shot. This guy stepped from behind the bushes. All of a sudden the wind changed for just a moment and all the heads shot up. They smelled me. The wind was blowing and I tried to keep the rifle steady. I thought "now or never". A couple shots later he was down.

Quartered him out - took a bit of time. He had such a big body, a bit of fat, and lots of meat. I looked at my GPS and found I was almost 2 miles away from a road. Thankfully the flat wrapped around the base of the mountain and I did not have to climb anything or I would've died. Hiked half to the road and dropped it off. I hiked another 1.5 miles to my vehicle and brought it to the road. Got my pack frame, hiked back 2 miles to get the other half, then hiked the 2 miles again. Have no idea how a little guy like me did it - running on adrenaline and knowing I will have meat for the year must've gotten me through it. My knees and body today feel like he weighed 500 lbs even though he was probably not even 2/5ths of that.

What a magnificat animal, a wide 8 (10 almost 11 counting brow tines), a bit of character with a chipped tine, and my second deer. Any deer is a trophy and I will always have the memory of this hunt - one of the hardest things I've done.”

I been texting my nephew, he’s young and hunting in a ground blind and I’m at work. He's seeing deer but can't get them to stop. Trying to help the boy out.

Anybody have any good jerky flavor recipes? Nothing hot, the kids won’t eat it. I’m soaking it now to get the blood out.

Coworker’s son shot this “cactus buck”. A stag that never sheds horns or velvet! Pretty unique for sure. I am going to do an antler Mount for him so I will keep y’all updated on how it goes. Going to cure the velvet before I do anything.

I like to start with about 3/4 yoshidas, 1/8 soy sauce, and 1/8 apple cider vinegar. That in itself is a great marinade, but I add other things to taste... black pepper, ginger, hot sauce of your choosing, bourbon, green onion, sesame seed, mango, really whatever flavors you prefer.

I would never soak the meat like that. I don't even like getting the meat wet let alone soaking it.

If they are in range, a baaah or maaaaah, might stop them otherwise just yell "hey".

That’s what I told him. To yell. He said I tried that once with my crossbow but I didn’t have my safety off and he ran off and I never saw him again. I said make sure your safety is off and be ready before doing it. Accept some responsibility, lol.

I was also going to say you better be ready to shoot when you yell, cuz you only have 2 seconds to make the shot

Man, cold day in the woods. Had the day off and wanted to sit all day. It was raining until about 7 am, and was 30°, and 20 mph winds. I waited til the rain was over and went. Got to my spot around 8:30. Had a couple yearlings at my stand when I got there. The wind never laid down and I was freezing around 11 so i got down. As soon as I got my treestand put together and started to pick it up, there were 3 walking straight toward me. All does.

Came home and thawed out for a while. Went back around 3 (different tree). Wind still blowing around 15-20 mph with stronger gusts and temp dropped all day. Had a small doe on the trail on the way in. As I was hanging my stand, had 2 more walk down the trail toward me. Both does. 5:30 I had a doe and 2 yearlings come in. 5:45 had another small doe come in, and as my feet hit the ground, I ran one out. Don’t know what it was, but I’ve had 5 different bucks at that stand over the last few days. I froze my ass off to see a bunch of does. I’m still cold, and I’ve been home for an hour.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
Sunday was brutal here in MN. Just a constant nasty cold wind from the NW. I sat for 7 hours in my stand with my back to the wind and saw nothing (saw nothing Saturday too). I was cold all night and most of the next day. Pretty demoralizing to go through all that and not even catch a glimpse of something. Hopefully, next weekend is a different story.

Got the cap cut and cleaned up the best I could. Luckily the velvet is pretty hardy right now because the antlers are hard underneath. I ordered some velvet tan so this thing will go into the freezer until that shows up. Then will cure and process as normal
