Shot through the heart dropped it in it's tracks. Guy shot it before i did blew apart his rear leg and skinned the top of his neck. Walked into an opening 60 yards away and dropped it. Second buck this yes both on opening day. Cant wait to get it mounted.

Looking to buy my first rifle for next season soon. What do y'all suggest looking at? I heard the tried and true is the Remington 700. But what kind of 700?

What's the normal price range for those? And what is a good beginning scope?

I'd be hunting Whitetails, Mule Deer, and Elk.

    Thanks in advance.

If you plan on killing elk. I would get a 30-06. Enough to bring down any animal with the correct bullet and not too bad on the shoulder.

I have two. One in .30-06, BDL model, and one in .300WinMag, standard synthetic stock model. Brand new, $700ish price range. Depends on the model of course. Remington gives you quite a selection to choose from. Picked up my .300WinMag for $400-$500ish used iirc. Got the .30-06 for 25% off retail price brand new when a local sporting goods chain went bankrupt.

I've been hearing good news about the Redfield line of scopes. Leupold bought the name and manufactures them along with backing them with a lifetime warranty. Leupold is pretty much the standard to judge by. Not the premier company, but a damn good standard. I'll probably be picking up a Redfield or two at some point in the next year or so.

As far as calibers, my opinion is .300WinMag minimum for elk. Sure you can hunt with smaller calibers, but I just want to get the critter down as quick and painlessly as I can. The ideal shot placement isn't always possible, so that extra energy helps compensate for it when it happens, unfortunately. My dad hunted elk with a .270 for years with little problem before he had one get away, then he moved up to .338mag. I usually use the .270 for deer, but the stock broke this season so I had to use the .300WinMag. It put this year's buck down in a hurry.

I am taking all of next week off from work and will put some serious time in trying to get my elk... School and work have kept me from getting out at all so far this year. Haven't shot a bull in a few years now. I'm about due.

Damn right! My dad's been scouting a bit and says that he think that he knows where they are. The huge storm that came through here moved stuff around...

And like these guys said... If you are going to have only one caliber for large game, go with a 30-06. I hunt elk with a 300 win, but it would blow a deer to pieces. I use my 7mm for bucks, and the .223 if I am going out just to shoot does.

Good point. I am getting the serious itch to get started. Duck hunting this year took up all my savings, but next season I'll be out there looking for some deer. Honestly really want to bow hunt, but I realize that's a whole different game. Figured it would be the natural progression to go from a rifle to a bow...

Actually the other way around... If you can kill an animal with a bow, rifle hunting is cake. Bow hunting teaches you patience and how to track much better than rifle hunting will. If I am around next hunting season I would be more than happy to take you out to drop a deer or two if you want.

Thanks for the generous offer man, that'd be awesome. Here goes another hobby that takes the bank account down. It's all worth it though.

As long as you don't go too ridiculous the costs aren't too bad... Get yourself a gun, ammo, some good boots, and some warm clothes and I'll have just about everything else you need if you go with me. That way you can see what you really need and don't need if you wanna get into it for real
