Update on trying to make a euro Mount burying the skulls - been nearly 4 months and they still smell rank. Pulled the skull plate one out and it still has a little stuff on it. The full skull looked down to the bone in the front but still had stuff around the back.

To be fair it has been cold so I’m sure the process is slowed down. Idk if I should cut some ventilation in the Rubbermaid tub covering them to give it more air to speed it up but I don’t want a rodent getting in and chewing the antlers up.

I’m worried the dirt will discolor the antlers. I would have buried them more but I quickly found out the asphalt pad the garage is on extends past the back of it and I didn’t want them in the middle of the yard so I’ll just give it time.

    It will discolor the antlers.

you could wrap the antlers before burying them I would think. That should prevent any discolorations same as boiling and bleaching.

That sounds like a lot of work when this started out as the lazy method haha. I’m going to give it a while longer and if it still isn’t done maybe I’ll try something else.

A friend of mine has beetles, he does them for us. It cleans them like nothing else BUT they still stink.

I’ve been tempted to get some. It is also popular to do paddlefish bills around here but that only feeds them September to January of deer and March/April on paddlefish so idk what to do the rest of the year. I figure most that keep them year round have a small colony most of the year and build up a big one by feeding more around when they are used most.

The easiest and best-results method I call the bucket method. Put the head into a 5 or 10 gallon bucket that has holes drilled in the lid and bottom. Then seal it up and hang it high from a tree. It stinks but if you’re not too close to your neighbours after a year you can give it a simmer in boiling water, polish and bleach.

I don't know if the elementary school next door would be pleased if I took that route but I am interested to try it somewhere else. Do the skulls discolor at all? In dirt they usually take on a brown tint.

A couple of years ago I had a deer head...I wrapped the antlers in a black trashbag and taped them really well around the bases leaving just the skull exposed, then I put them in a large barrel outside; the following August the skull was 95% clean with very little smell.

Welp, turns out this guy called the landowner in Georgia recently trying to lease the place we hunt out from under us here in N.C. I don't get the nerve of some people. I talked to this guys uncle the other day and ask him if he's found anywhere to hunt. He said I don't know why he's looking, he hunts my whole place. It's over 100 acres

No, that’s the best part. They stay yellowish but after bleaching with peroxide they are bright white. All the small bones also stay perfectly intact.

The other thing about dirt is that depending on the richness of the soil and the temperature I’ve seen it compost the skull itself and wreck it. The bacterial action can be fierce.

It’s also a bitch to clean all the dirt out of it when the process is complete.

I don't envy the competition out east at all. I may strike out western public land hunting, but you bet you're ass I'm covering 50+ miles in a week in order to not see anything
