Yea I was planning on shooting yesterday evening but it was absolutely pouring when I got home. Was wanting to go hunt this evening after work but I’m gonna go home and shoot to see if I can figure out what I did. Then maybe hunt tomorrow evening.

 

My understanding is that the few elk that do exist around central and south Texas are the result of elk escaping high fence ranched over the years. I know a few people that Hunt around Mason, Tx who have seen and harvest Elk. I hunt just a little ways from there in Menard, TX. A coupled years ago a Red Stag was spotted by one of the guys on our lease. These parts of Texas are filled with massive high fence ranches will all sorts of animals.

 

This is true. There is game ranches everywhere around us.

This was the first pic we captured on a trail camera on our lease. One person identified it as a Red Stag.

And that is exactly why I asked for other opinions. They're not common here and I can't afford game ranch prices. I got a few different opinions.

 

well I've never seen a red stag in person but I've seen a good amount of elk. I'd be reallly surprised if that wasn't a young bull elk.

 

In Texas, if its non native and on your low fence lease then you have every right to harvest it. Game ranches cannot recover losses from a hunter that shoots an animal that escaped. But, as an ethical hunter you should only shoot what you can identify.

 

Now I'm just curious if that one and the one I harvested are the same.

 

maybe when was the first picture taken compared to when you harvested that elk?

could be possible. If you dont get pics of any more elk like that one with 2 antlers it was prob the one you shot. It may have knocked off one antler rubbing off the velvet

 

It seems red stag and elk look alot alike.

@phillstill is right then. That is very far from where free ranging elk are in Texas. Must've been an escape from a ranch.

Historically they were native to north and west texas. Got killed off. Then reintroduced (same subspecies) to those historic areas in small numbers, which grew to a few thousand or so now.
