what's the story behind the stone walls?

 

We take them for granted in New England. They are everywhere.
200 years ago, pretty much everything was clearcut.
All fields and Winters heaved up stones every year.
They made all kinds of boundaries with them. A lot of walls are pretty elaborate, including animal pens and corrals near old cellar holes. Most walls were just not thrown together, but "engineered" for the time period.
Some were signed by the builders at a main bar way.

Here's an aerial photo I pulled up from 1934 in one of my hunting areas.
Even as late as the 1930's the area was still farmed and the walls (and a roadbed near the new reservoir can be seen.
I can even see the wall I sat at today.
Like I said, they are everywhere and date from colonial times to the mid 1800s.

Happy New Years deer hunters.went out to eat and damn if i didnt see a nice 8pt tending a doe on the way to town. ive always felt we can make fun of ourselves to have fun. Wife said im anal. my hunt closet is just off the kitchen. most everything is in tubs,but when i made jerky yesterday i did this cause it makes alot of great smoke and soy sauce smell.she says im weird but my clothes are scent free. LMAO

Happy New Years
Another successful year in the books. I was able to put some venison in the freezer. Not one of my biggest, but like I tell people, a big rack won't fit in the freezer.
Ground up burger yesterday, I need to order some breakfast sausage seasoning.
Postcard from DNR came in the mail. I got a spring turkey tag. Not the week I wanted but it will do.
Congrats to everyone that was successful.
Any day in the woods is better than work.
