I vacuum-seal mine, and then I wrap it in a layer of freezer paper and it keeps for at least 2 years (maybe more, but I've never had any deer meat last that long before I ate it :D ) in the deep freeze, without any burn.

Edit- If you're keeping food in a regular freezer (Like the one attached to your fridge), though, it will be considerably shorter due to the defrost cycle those go through to keep them from icing up.

I'd say meat is good for at least 2 years as well...after that I think is a stretch. You can always make a bunch of jerky...

What also helps is keeping the freezer clean. When we get sub zero temps I empty my freezers, store everything outside in coolers or in boxes and let the units fully defrost in the heated shop. Then I clean them really well with soap and water, wipe and turn back on.

Nasty freezers make for nasty odors.

    Truth.

Mine get cleaned every other year. By June or so I've usually consolidated everything into one freezer, and the other one gets unplugged (and defrosted, as a result) and a bleach/water scrub down. I switch off which one I consolidate to every year, so they both get cleaned regularly.

    Thanks!
Funny, I actually was thinking he was a short bodied deer. The ones I grew up shooting in the Western Mountains were about a foot longer on average. this guy weighed in at 137lbs, which is light for an 8 pointer in my experience. I shot a 6 pointer in the Farmington area in high school who weighed 174.
Could be. I shot mine on the Rachel Carson preserve in Kennebunk. Where'd you get yours?

I hunt public ground down here. It's a lottery archery only watershed area about 4k acres broken into blocks. Most areas are 5-15 minute drives from where I sit. Only get a light crowd in a few areas early in the season. As the season goes on and gun season opens, most bow areas are left alone. Some of the spots I visit, no pressure all season.
Got this guy last year. Same tree, same week, and same shot as this year's.

    Nice.
Rachel Carson is similar. Limited number of permits per year, shotguns loaded w/buckshot only. No rifles, no slug guns. We almost never run into anybody else, but we see the wardens a couple of times per season.

    Yup.
This same watershed area also has shotgun only areas in addition to the bow areas.
No buckshot here, but slugs are OK. Kind of a real nice arrangement as some bow areas are only across a road from shotgun areas, and you know what happens when the shooting starts, lol.
I got a 100 lb dink with the shotgun in that area 2 weeks ago to top off the freezer.

I shot a button buck (actually technically a spikehorn, but his nubs were shorter than his ears so it doesn't count  ) about that size for my first deer. Worked out to about 30lbs of melt-in-your-mouth.

Edit: Of course, since he only weighed 100lbs my dad made me drag him out myself. Tough work for a kid who only weighed about 20lbs more than that soaking wet, lol.

    Speaking of twins;

These two bothcame off of local public land the week of thanksgiving. I know where one is from, and i THINK the other is from the same general area. Check out how similar they are...

Got my first deer. About a minute after, I saw one bouncing in the bushes and I could only get a neck shot. So I took the shot. Bummed out that it was a little Bambi. But I'm still excited I got two for my first time. IMG_3996.jpg

Does anyone here do any gun work? I'm looking for some tips on pillar bedding a rifle.
