Big difference between scouting, finding a naturally occuring food source and hunting over it vs a timed feeder when as soon as it spins they show up.

Deer hunting is like almost everything else in life. Some start at third base and some have to work to get there. Some have property, have access to property, can afford a lease, can afford a hunt. Some have to hunt public. Whats the difference between a food plot and a feeder other than work?

I"ve hunted some of the best areas one could hope to find, owned by a land company. Some very rich people, who I knew, bought it, mined it, and turned it into bird hunting. Is it fair? IDK, but it is what it is.

A plot generally benefits more wildlife than just the deer and it’s generally available longer. I don’t plant plots either but you asked the question.

Not my original first bow - a Bear Whitetail also - but one I bought for $5 from a landowner I worked with while employed by the state. I was offered it for free, but that was a NO-NO, so he told me $5 and it was mine. Hangs in a bedroom at camp.
Also had an Oneida H-250 (I think it was) before the screaming eagle. Loved those Oneida bows!!!Screenshot_20231206-210255.png

Food plots and bait are designed for the specific purpose of holding and attracting wildlife for a specific purpose. Ask yourself this. If deer hunting was banned, would you still plant food plots?

Nope. I'd have to take the money I spend on deer hunting and buy meat in the grocery store where animals were raised in a fence and fed the same stuff everyday so I could feed my family.

That was my first compound bow. I bought it from my uncle.

Exactly. Both bait and food plots are to attract AND hold deer on a property. And while food plots have a longer term benefit, the purpose is still the same. And please note, while the land is private, the resource (wildlife) is owned by the state.

I don’t give a rip for the whys for baiting or plots, that’s none of my business where it’s legal to do so.
I’ve heard of a recent study where there were no bird nests of any kind for the 300yds surveyed around bait sites with the theory that the baiting attracts predators. That study didn’t check farther than 300yds. That’s of interest to me as a turkey hunter. Also studies showing corn mold antifloxin from baiting kills young of the year turkeys. Baiting sure seems to drive deer to nocturnal feeding at some point. Then you have “defensive” baiting where you have a lot of hunters, small tracts of land and that wonderful fun like here locally.

If I had the land and means to put in annual food plots I’d probably do it to attract wildlife, benefit them year round and not just during deer season.

I’ve got sense enough to know everybody’s circumstances are different. Good luck and hope you all are able to enjoy deer hunting for what it is.

I learned a long time ago if I don't plant a food plot or bait where I can, the deer go to the neighbors on both sides who have stuff out. My neighbor has killed a lot of deer I've seen, I don't care. We hunt to fill our freezer, sometimes we're blessed with bigger deer than other years but it doesn't matter to me. We hunt for the meat.
