I'd never thought of that before until a couple years ago I was watching a hunting show and the guy was talking about that. He said when you go to the buffet, do you get one thing or do you get your favorite? Deer are the same way, they'll walk through certain things to get what they want, until it's gone then they'll get what is next.

Another pleasant surprise with this property.
I have a mature Kousa Dogwood tree near my woodline.
This thing is loaded with fruit and apparently deer and bears eat these fruits.
There was a doe chowing down on these yesterday for 45 mins in broad daylight.
Last weeks bear was standing on his hind legs eating them.

oh, i thought i saw a pic you had posted with one......well, great i deer this feeder, and just be aware, the treerats absolutely love it, from hanging from the tubes, to sprawling on top of a tube and reachin in, to the next squirrel to die in QA county. i watched this sumbitch hang from the end of a tube for a second, then he pulled himself up and into the tube, and sat in there for 20 mfin minutes, he was dropping debris on his buddies below, then took off. as i sat and watched them, i was thinkin bout ways to slow em down, until that one did what he did. next visit imma taking my target bolt with me, and if he or any other rat does it, imma pin his ass to the earth. still aint seen a deer in the woods yet....:pout:

IDK, deer aren't people IMO, the fewer the food sources the better the hunting because you know where they are going. A food source scattered all over the forest floor makes for difficult hunting, IMHO.
