So, it's been a little while since I've posted here, but.... hit a deer doing about 70 on the interstate a couple weeks ago, which totaled my 2010 Standard Cab, 5-speed, 2.7. I loved that little truck and was fairly devastated.

However, yesterday I ended up with an '07 V6 TRD, SR5 6-speed manual and am feeling the Taco-citement all over again! I'm new to the 4.0 and all the TRD stuff, but really looking forward to learning more.
    2007Tacoma.jpg

My first question... tips, tricks, essential first mods to these 4.0's? ...especially related to towing?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the link to the towing bible! Skyway; It is rebuildable with the right time, tools, and skills. I need a truck to tow motorcycles with though, not a project to rebuild, so I passed on buying it back from insurance. Airbags did blow and the motor is significantly damaged.

That sucks about the truck. I'm not doubting your claim about the damaged engine, I just don't see how it could have even been touched from the picture you posted.

Well, I'm afraid I don't know details about the engine damage. I know that there was about $6200 in repair costs, until they got to the engine...at which time, insurance informed me that it would be a total loss.

my worst nightmare, as I live in Michigan, and see deer all the time ... it's common place how often people hit them, or deer hit vehicles here (one of them ran into the back passengers door on my Mother in Laws car ...

OP - I'm glad you are OK - worse things have happened with deer impacts and air bag deployment. I hit a big mulie doe up by Bowman, N.D. one evening on snow pack - took the front end off a company vehicle (Jeep Cherokee). Stopped OK, didn't set off the bags - but pushed the radiator into the engine and puked all of the water (-10ºF). N.D.State patrolman gave me a lift to town and said "You sure are lucky the bags didn't go off"..... "We had a patrolman killed a few weeks ago - hit a deer, bags blasted him hard - lost control but the car didn't slow - ran off the road and hit a tree square on. Bags were already discharged so ..."

Don't know how a system could detect the difference between a "sharp" impact and a "solid" impact - but wow - would hate to have them go off at speed..................

ha... yes! Should have been. I'm not that smart though. ;) ...I've already put new wheels on, put a DDIN stereo, backup camera, and window tint. Maybe bumber next... HotTacomaBlown... yep, totalled my '10 as the 2.7 motor needed to be replaced. GreenBird56... yes, I thought about that a lot. I was probably doing 70 when I hit it and my bags went off. I was very lucky to keep control I think.

Glad you're okay OP. Deer don't mess around, whether they intend to or not. When I lived in Texas, they were EVERYWHERE. We would always see them dead on the side of the road from car accidents.

I remember one time hearing in the news that a lady hit a deer and it went through her windshield, started flailing wildly and kicked her toddler child to death in the backseat. Terrible...so it could be worse!

    Congrats on the new truck!

I used to work machine erection jobs in Aussie-land back in the 80's - and I had an electrician, Brian Horton who would boogie off to Sidney for the weekend. He would come back in the wee hours of Monday morning - driving his "rent-a-car" like a mad man. Hor' showed up back at the job all beaten to crap - two black eyes, cut lips, bruises, bandages and so on - an ugly beating. Crew jumped him big time about being in a "dust-up" at the local pub ....... and ending up on the losing end. He had hit a big 'roo - it went through the windshield, and ending up rolled into the bar ditch with it alive in the front seat with him. Where it proceeded to kick the daylights out of him - just plain used him as a punching bag with all four legs! He claimed to have finally escaped by kicking out the rest of the windshield.......

I barely missed more than a few of the rascals myself - they were virtually the same color as a mule deer - and had the same bad habit of grazing right up to the roads edge in twilight. If you surprise one in the road it will often jump straight up - and typically higher than the hood of a passenger car. If you are lucky - they'll just take off the wipers! Our work trucks had big cages built on the front - way beyond the bumpers TW guys put on their wheelin' trucks.
