no-one wants to be in that situation. the only thing that matters is that you are mentally prepared to respond in that situation

for most normal people...correct...no one WANTS to be in that position

    unknown

and unfortunately...no matter how much training and how much practice you go thru...you never no HOW mentally prepared you are until after the fact

i know very well trained officers who have frozen in times when they shouldve had their guns out...luckily they were with other officers who didnt freeze and were able to stop the threat...but...it happens

I'm definitely not saying she shouldn't have shot him. She did what she had to do to protect herself. I'm just saying the sight and sound of a shotgun being cocked would scare the shit out of most people. But true the guy was prob on something to be banging on the doors like that

Fair enough I can see the point. They don't belong in your house so you don't owe them any warning.

I just wouldn't want to shoot someone if I could get around it.

oh trust me i dont want to shoot anyone...however what i DO want is every tactical advantage possible when and if that day ever comes

racking a shotgun makes noise...which can give away your position...if the intruder wants to harm you...he now knows where you are

if you are quiet...he may not even know youre home...

I have jumper cables in my truck. As well as a tire plug kit, compresssor, first aid kit, oil, and 2 MRE packs. I have a tow strap. I have foul weather gear and other small stuff. I also have my gun.

I'm not looking for a dead battery, a flat, to get hurt, or to get stuck in the rain. But it happens. I'm not looking to shoot any one. But situations happen where I might have to.

I'm a grown man. I do not rely on a cell phone to call for help and wait for a tow truck, or to wait for the police in a life or death situation.

That is kind of bone chilling to listen to. The last thing any human wants to do is to take the life of another.

I'd feel like I'd be prepared to do so, but I hope that time never comes.

i almost have to disagree with you on this. a very well trained officer who freezes cannot be that well trained at all. when someone has trained intesively with firearm discipline the shot will be almost automatic....threat realized....threat eliminated....search for next threat. you cannot and should not take the time to think about anything or to freeze. decisions have to be made instinctively and instantly.
