It's the only one besides MidwayUSA that even sells it, and Midway is usually out. HST are only sold commercially to LE Departments so you're pretty much boned if you don't want for some reason to go with Ammotogo. Could go the Winchester SXT route.

Bought 250 rounds of the SXT from Midway, I know it's good stuff - would like to find some HST to test and compare though. Thanks for the info.

My favorite read on self defense ammo. It may be a little dated with the addition of the very good Gold Dot and Hornady self defense rounds, especially those designed for short barrel.

I use Remington golden sabers most of the time, but if winter clothing will be an issue I use hornaday CD or Federal Hydroshock.

Yeah and hydroshock is getting expensive compared to stuff that's just as good.

Not for defensive use. Factory loads, only. If I ever have to shoot someone I want forensics to be able to completely reproduce my ballistics using independent third party data. If it is a handload there is no third party data available.

I get my data from Ken Waters' Pet Loads book. So the data is out there can can be reproduced.

@BFA, I have heard that too, but talking to police, lawyers and judges, I can't put any weight into that argument.

craziness! just thought it wouldnt have kill power after going through a wall, i dont use the scatter pipe for home defence though, too impractical, got a sig P220 for that ;)

What can not be reproduced is that you reloaded the bullet the way the book calls for. In a factory environment there are quality controls in place during the manufacuring event that are not dependent on the person doing the shooting.

If you open the book and load the bullet the way Ken Waters has notated, then ballistics will be the same.

As for quality control, my standards are much higher than any manufacting plant.

Many reloaders do a much better job than any factory can do because of the individualized personal attention to each load. The point is that the only element of quality control is what you as the reloader bring to the table. You have a personal vested interest in the results. The independent quality control doesn't.

If you are being investigated in a shooting the court most likely will, based on previous trial results, completely disregard anything and everything you tell them about your quality controls, how many grains of powder you used and your choice of bullets. With a factory load the independent verification of how the bullet was loaded will ensure the data is accepted.

For target practice I buy by price. For the real thing (which has never happened) I carry Federal Hydra-Shok in all my hand guns. Those cost too much to shoot more than a magazine or two.
