I think our culture is just so used to throwing things away when repairs are difficult- one of the most responsible things we can do is fix and use something that would have otherwise been in a landfill.

Thats amazing. Who is this dealer that does mostly salvage stuff? Im curious.

Certainly dont have to go into more detail if you dont want to but Im very curious, are we talking like 50% off or 90% off?

ya my x-runner had a minor frame tweak at the control arm and it was totaled, if I hadn't needed a truck for work immediately waiting for a frame from toyota would have been the path I would have chose.

    My experience with salvage vehicles:
I'm getting ready to off my 08 salvage trd. I bought it wrecked from a california business that buys them from insurance auctions, beats out the dents sort of, throws a windshield and mirrors on em and calls it a "lot driver":jpow:.
I replaced almost every body panel on it, including part of the roof, did a crappy home paint job on it and put it on the road as my primary. I was into a truck with under 40k miles on it for less than 14k:bananadance: That was most of 200k miles ago. It's been a great truck and figuring it wasn't really worth much resale I drove it like I stole it for the past 12+ years. Liability only insurance and cheap registration due to the cost basis. It's still a great rig but ranching, winter, and dirt roads have taken their toll...
Had enough of the old beater so now I'm buying brand new, looking at 45k+ to get in, and still the ranching, winter and dirt roads. Got to re-train my brain that this one IS NOT a beater, and cough up for full insurance and registration. I'm a little apprehensive about the change and concerned about the mud, snow and dirt roads with all the new electronics.
But the salvage truck was a great experience, I would do it again!

There's a huge movement for right to repair these days. Looking at everything from phones to John Deere tractors. Especially in Europe they're passing laws to mandate that these things be repairable.

I mean if you can't fix it, do you even really own it?

It wasn’t 50% off. The entire truck is new outside of the components in the cab, engine, and transmission/ transfer case. What would $45k truck be worth to you with a salvage title?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Define totaled any time the Insurance Company deems the repair cost more then the vehicles worth.

All my Toyota 4x4`s are salvage titles .

Here in Pa any vehicle that the title is returned to the state as no longer registered if at any time is retitled gets a salvage title .As things change that was true my last vehicle purchase.

One vehicle was bought the only issue was failed clutch hydraulics .

There is or was a Company that specialized in rebuilding Toyota Vehicles not far away from me that had a very good record.

Here in CA any theft recovery is usually considered salvaged. I might consider that option but there is no way I'd be as brave as the OP. Those pics would have had me running out the door...

If each part of the Ship of Theseus was replaced one at a time, is it still the same ship?

Leo Goolden tackled this question as part of his Tally Ho build. (One of the best series on YouTube, go check it out if you haven't already.) He said if at any given time you can look at the boat and it still looks like a boat then it's still the same boat. I like that explanation.

I would love to know more about how they make this business model work.

    Child/slave labor?

Exporting them to Nicaragua and Afghanistan?

Maybe insurance companies aren’t as transparent about what constitutes a total loss. Anything is as valuable as what someone is willing to pay. From the sounds of most of the people on this thread there is this idea that a collision is the end of life for every vehicle - and apparently, especially 3rd Gen Tacomas.

This particular collision is admittedly extreme - but there were several stories that the salesman shared of vehicles in worse condition that were rebuilt.

All it takes is someone willing to get dirty with some work - the parts are all available to replace.

    Yeah.
I think what he was getting at (maybe) is how much you have invested in it at this point. A $45K truck for $25K might be worth it, but a $45K truck for $35K may not be worth the trouble. Depending on the market, that's probably about what you could get for it with a salvage title, maybe a bit more. But good on you for reviving it, I hate throwing stuff away. It seems like you were able to salvage a lot of the vital organs but had to replace the skeleton and skin. And what you couldn't salvage could likely be recycled. That's a ton of work, though.
