To be clearer perhaps I should have written "All current Tacomas now have power windows and door locks standard."

Hello I owned a first generation tacoma for many years, great truck. I want to get back into a tacoma but this time I need a double cab since now I have a wife and three kids. I’m debating between 4 cyl vs v6. I’m leaning towards the 4 cyl since is more affordable and gas prices in California suck. I don't need much power since I will mainly use the truck as a daily driver and small house projects. My only concern is that once in a while I would like to take the truck on road trips, camping etc, I just would like to know in your experiences if the 4cyl dc can handle five passengers with a loaded bed caping gear, cooler etc. Thanks for the help!

I’m excited for you to get back in a Tacoma! I’ve owned both, 4 cylinder and V6, in the double cab body style. I was in a pinch when I purchased the 4 cylinder, well moreso, I really wanted to get back in a Tacoma and only budgeted for the bare minimum expense of the SR. I knew exactly what I was getting and tempered my expectations of power/acceleration, so I wasn’t disappointed with the 4 cylinder. I found the 4 cylinder netted about 1-2 MPG better in the city than the V6, but didn’t compare quite as well on the highway.

My recommendation is the V6 since you’re on the fence and a 2019 SR5 V6 can be purchased nowadays with end of year discounts ($5k-$6k) off MSRP that are much more than usual considering dealers want to move 2019 models in place of 2020 models. If you can land a SR5 with a huge discount, that will easily put you at the MSRP of a SR or even less.

Welcome! The 4 cyl double cab should do what you need it to just fine. My dad has a 2014 2.7L DCSB, and tows a cattle trailer every couple of weeks. It probably weighs somewhere around 1500-2k lbs. He has 265/75/16s as well which are one size larger than stock. If you're on the fence, i say go for it! The 2.7 is bullet proof, i've got 256k on mine, and it has never left me stranded. Welcome aboard!
