Defrost engages AC compressor

What is this frost you speak of?

I could hear the compressor kick on and off in my 01 and you would notice a drop in RPMs while in defrost mode and adjusting the temp. My 12 does the same thing with RPMs (RPMs drop at idle after hitting a certain point on the temp knob) minus hearing the compressor kick on and off, my 01 ac compressor was noisy and squeaky compared to the 12 so you knew when it was on and off.

 

more effective yes, necessary no. I had several Fords with an ac switch that was independent of the dial that controlled the ducts. I have also rented many cars that you could switch off.

my 1979, 81, 85, 86 and 92 trucks do not do that.
-there are no electronic controls for it to "decide" it wants to..
-that means if you want it to, you still have to push the button.
-works fine with just hot air

All of my tacoma's have.
-still works fine
-noticed it much more on the 2.7 obviously

and as far as the 96 i have no idea.

No, what is really retarded is the fact that there is a switch that does not turn A/C off when in certain modes. There are many times that I run my defrost solely to warm the windshield znf rid it of ice. In these cases it makes no sense to run the compressor. Ask me and I day Toyota is retarded.
