Umm, diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline. They also generally produce more torque. One of the reasons for diesel is greater efficiency + equivalent performance.

The BMW 1 series is a great example (in the UK)

    118i SE Manual - HP - 143 : MPG - 46.3 : 0-62 - 8.7sec
    118d SE Manual - HP - 143 : MPG - 62.8 : 0-62 - 8.9sec

Same thing on the 3 series, 318i vs 318d.
    318i SE HP - 143 : MPG - 44.8 : 0-62 - 9.1sec
    318d SE HP - 143 : MPG - 62.8 : 0-62 - 9.1sec

Even better in the 320i vs 320d.

    320i SE HP - 170 : MPG - 44.1 : 0-62 - 8.2sec
    320d SE HP - 184 : MPG - 60.1 : 0-62 - 7.5sec

I guess for some it is about saying "DIESEL" or blowing smoke. For others it IS about efficiency with = or better performance...

-31 MPG is not much better?
-Restaurants have to pay to get rid of their used oil, they'd be willing to give it away for free. Free fuel for your vehicle isn't worth it? Sure, go to the pump and spend close to $4 a gallon.
-500k beats 300k. But for gas engines the 1st engine last a LONG time!

I've only driven in SoCal for weeks at a time, so I guess I never saw the worst of it (compared to living there for years). Either way, I never have had road rage like I did in Portland, it took 3 months after I moved to La Grande to get that out of my system.

Maybe it's KPG (Kilmoters per Gallon)?

Sure, not that it changes the fact that the diesel engines are producing the same or better performance, while returning ~25% better economy

    45 UK MPG = 37.5 US MPG
    61 UK MPG = 50.8 US MPG

    Nope, known as Imperial gallons.

And a UK mile is the same as a US mile. Just like a kilometer is the same in the US as it is everywhere else.

And to verify numbers, the 335d is the same economy on both the UK and US sites, (when the UK site is converted from Imperial gallons)

    -31mpg for what vehicle?
-they're not going to give it away when they know a large amount of people are going to use it in their vehicle. they will realize that they can SELL it and make money from it.
-300k STARTING. there are a ton of people on here with 300k at least, some with many more.

Lets use the same car, rather than a significantly upgraded version, with more features and a bigger, more powerful, engine. Try comparing the 335i vs the 335d, where there is a ~$2100 difference.

    And if you were wondering:

    335i HP - 306 : MPG - 32.5 : 0-62 5.6sec

    335d HP - 286 : MPG - 42.2 : 0-62 6.0sec

Both with Auto trans, imperial MPG

taking middle of the line - 320i vs 320d ES versions, from the UK site:

2115 pounds. That = $3326 at current exchange rate.

    Or less than 10% difference.

Im not sure what point you think you may be getting at, but instead of simple questions, want to just state it?

I will admit that diesel is not the answer for everyone. A lot of people will be better off/spend less with gas vehicles, if their use and driving amount are more suited for that.

I am also smart enough to see that diesels are a smart move forward for internal combustion.

Try reading again. The first part. Right here:

And what, exactly, is different about fuel economy and cost between the US and another country? The fact that ~10% more buys you ~25-30% better fuel economy, with equivalent or better performance?

The thing is, I guess if you want a Prius with 48mpg, and a 0-60 time of 10 seconds, or a BMW 3 series diesel (when/if it makes it to the US) with 50mpg, and a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds, more power to you.

Or is your entire argument that you cant buy many diesels here, so they must be a bad idea for other vehicles?

So your entire argument is "they arent available here", and "German Civic"?

And good luck with that VW fuel pump. They are a bit expensive, and go out on most of them.

Jetta/Golf = German Civic. Not sure how the idea of an efficient, inexpensive transportation device is an insult, but good for you...;)

I think we will see it. Maybe not this decade, but with the new fleet MPG policies and Nissan taking a Titan to diesel, I believe it will happen (if anything, to at least compete with Nissan). It might start with the Tundra and go from there, but I think Toyota will do it just because it's cheaper than making a Hybrid.

What the hell is this? I think the total number of TW members that don't hate the Prius now equals 2 (out of 45,000+) - you and me.
