VW Jetta gas 30 MPG Jetta diesel 50+ I own one and drive it like I stole it, it has 220,000 miles on it and I'll probably need to do a rebuild some where around 400,000, it has more torque then the gas engine by a good 35% it is turbo charged and is not your grandfathers Olds diesel. Winebago Via class A motor home, MB V6 turbo diesel 15+ MPG. Diesel is the way to go they do at least 30% better on fuel then the same displacement gas engine and pull far better with their huge torque difference you can't figure the cost difference of the fuel you need to figure the cost per mile and the diesel will win every time. If they put a 6 cylinder turbo diesel in a Tacoma they would not be able to keep them in stock. Any one that thinks a modern diesel is slow needs to drive one, the fastest things out there right now is an Audi diesel nothing gas has beat it yet. I will say if you don't do a lot of miles it's not cost effective if you pull a trailer or drive a lot of miles then a diesel is for you.

After 21 years living in Portland I used to think the same thing, now that I have lived in Seattle and Denver I know I was wrong Portland has fairly polite drivers especially compared to Denver the highway here is such a shit show!

It is possible for diesel to be both quick and efficient. Look at what Audi is doing in Le mans. Also I own a dura max that runs 13.99 qtr mile on 35s and still gets a combined 21 if they are done right there is no dis advantage other than a little higher cost but with the much much longer lifer expectancy of most diesel engines that's. It much of a problem either. But I agree no we will probably never see a diesel taco here.

add me to that list i want a diesel in my regular cab toyota needs to make one that meets emissions standards and offer it across the model range. then they would rule the truck segment in the us.

a high torque turbo diesel gives me a wetty lolz

A 13.99 truck is pretty damn fast by any standards. Especially cuz he's running on 35's I would love to see a gas engine run that.

Correction: It isn't AS fast. 13.99 is faster than a lot of cars.

OK this is a very expensive car but then again so is the jet but this is what's to come in diesels they are powerful, clean, and the future Toyota needs to pull their thumb out and build a 50 state diesel engine no doubt they can do it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByGBB4oHDng

That Hilux you saw came from miami and was driving to washington dc. We bulletproof them here in miami and they drive them up sometimes. FYI we import them for the government and they send them back out to other countries.

I bet he'd have problems in California. Found this on a hotrod site:

I have done some very significant research into this and have spoken directly to a Referee at BAR. Here is the lowdown:

Any engine swap (unless it is the identical engine as was supplied by the factory) will require a referee visit. So, putting a 5.0L ford V8 from another Mustang into a V6 Mustang will still require a visit to the BAR referee.

The engine must be from the same year or newer and have ALL the emissions equipment which was originally supplied with the donor engine from the factory.
If the donor engine is computer controlled (OBDI or OBDII), the diagnostic port and SES light must be installed and operate properly. This means that if the donor vehicle had fuel tank with pressure sensor and vapor solenoid etc, etc, then the fuel tank from the donor needs to be installed also. The PCM cannot be reprogrammed to delete DTC, and the PCM cannot be throwing DTC (SES light illuminated).
The engine must be from the same family of vehicles, ie cars to cars, trucks to trucks etc. The family cut off for car's family is 1 ton trucks. Thus, a 3/4 ton truck engine can be installed into a yugo etc. You cannot install a Yugo engine into a Ford F350 truck.....
hope that helps....CA smog testing requirements end at 1974 and older, so if you have a 1975 car, you need to smog test it. There is no longer a rolling 30 year exemption....it is frozen at 1974. All the above engine change information technically applies to vehicles from 1900 to 1974 also.......however....not having to smog test them biennially,
