You don’t push at all from 2H-4H and vice versa. Only need to push before switching between 4H-4L and vice versa. That’s why it only says “push” on half the dial dude.

OP, this video is worth a 20 minute watch to understand the mechanics of the Toyota part-time 4x4 system that we have. I think the ADD actuator is the part that requires all the tension to be removed. That shift fork motor can't overcome the forces of a loaded axle.

In addition, to take load off of gears snd drivetrain, backing jp a short distance helps.
That's an Old School Four Wheel Drive technique.

OP it doesn't matter how you actuate the switch. You can do it harshly or gently, no matter. If you turn the headlights on gently it's no easier on the system. The same is true of the 4wd switch. It's a simple electric switch.

If you are switching it back and forth between 2wd and 4wd you are probably just confusing the system. Switch it to the mode you want and try to unload the drivetrain to allow the solenoid to operate. Maybe shift to neutral and let off the brakes. Try Park. Try reverse. Quit fiddling with the switch.

I guess you'd have to define the delay length. I've had a little trouble getting into 4WD, but never out. I find as long as I'm not on the gas it'll move pretty seamlessly. It seems to take longer when not moving, but that's understandable.
