    2003 Toyota Tacoma 3.4 PreRunner / automatic / 142,000 miles
After a cold start, truck does not shift into second until one of the three things below happen.
    Reach 35 mph
    Engine Tach shows 2,200 rpms
Engine Temp reaches 131 on Ultragauge

Afterwards, shifting goes back to normal. When I say normal, I mean, the shift into 2nd is not delayed.
Example: The speed limit in my neighborhood is 25mph and it's about 3 blocks until I hit a stop sign. Starting off is fine, but will not shift into 2nd unless I get to 35 mph or the coolant temp is at 131 (UltraGauge)
    No throwing any codes, etc.

I've read about the "kick down cable" being adjusted, but wasn't sure if that applied to the 2003 model.
Any suggestions, or is this normal??

I have a 03 as well, mine does that too. I have 175k on the truck. I don't recall it doing it when i got it. I think maybe the fluid needs to be changed. It still shows pink/red when i wipe off the dip stick so i haven't been in a hurry to do it.

When it does shift, if it rough or thunky?

It's normal. My truck does the same thing when I don't let the engine warm up. Fix? Let the engine warm up a little prior to rollin down the road. The doo dad transmission cooler in the radiator is also......wait for it......a transmission warmer.

Fluid is fine. It's not so much rough or thunky as it's not as smooth as when it's warmed up. I really noticed it this morning because we had our first real cold morning (35-40dg) this morning.

Totally normal, kind of annoying though. Mine doesn't like to shift til about 2700 rpm.

Appreciate the response. I don't feel like the Lone Ranger now!

Thats when mine shifts. external transcooler makes this symptom worse as it doesn't really warm the trans up.

Other threads on this determined this is normal.

I have an aux trans cooler as well, it's a tru-cool 4454 that claims to have a bypass for the fluid when it's cold. I haven't noticed a change in rpm since installing it, so maybe it's working :notsure:

I have an 02 for 9 years and it always does that when cold. I always thought it had to do with the emissions. Toyota wants cleaner exhaust when the engine is cold, so they don't want the rpm's running low. That's my thought.

Don't mean to be a smarty pants but......the engine is super rich when the engine is cold and first started. This is to heat the catalytic convertor up as quickly as possible reduce emissions during warmup. During this time the O2's are in open loop until the coolant temp reaches a certain temp in which the system goes in to close loop to allow the O2 sensors to adjust the fuel to reach 14.7 or close to it.

Same thing happening to me. I was going to change my trans fluid. This week I was also told by smog check I need a new catalytic converter. I hope this can be an easy fix
