The strict legality of just about any mod could be questioned. That said, folks struggle to keep their driving legal even with a stock vehicle. Speed outside of school zones and neighborhoods is always debateable, but 24/7 fogs and high beams, the forgotten turn signal stalk, etc. are good enough enforcement fodder that is continuously overlooked.

Easy enough to disable on the spot if need be.

@tonered mentioned this as well. Plate lights will be on if not in reverse. This may actually be a feature rather than defect for towing. To have plate lights always off with anytime camera on when not in reverse would be a bit more work.

If the glare needs to be killed with the anytime camera, just flicking it in reverse or turning the lights off is pretty easy compared to the needed mod of running a camera signal wire to the tail.

It's also somewhat useful to show your significant other the before/after difference so they can understand why you spent 20 minutes tinkering with your truck :)

I haven't done my due diligence on this mod yet, but the before and after pictures were enough to sell me on it. Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense as to why it would be a disadvantage. I'm looking forward to getting one when my time comes, until then :playball:

I'm using prototype TotalTail harnesses with my reverse light being a Rigid flush mount to the right of my license plate, but this gives you an idea:

would this be PnP for 2nd Gen or is the harness different?
(sorry if this was covered but I didn't see it)

Good question. I have exactly one pair of brake/reverse connectors for 2nd gen. @Puppypunter might have more. It's definitely doable but would require some research on the license plate light intercept (not sure if it's the same type of connector) and the lengths, studs for mounting relay, etc. We'd likely need someone to be willing to test. The product as planned right now is specific to third gen.

I am even less knowledgeable on the 2nd gens, but based on conversations I’ve had with resident guru @caribe makaira I think it works with some depending on if they have the towing package or something. I know for a fact the reverse light tap connectors are different. They 2nd gen runs everything through one connector, whilst the 3rd gens use three. That part is simple enough to get around though. But the license plate light intercept is where I am not really sure.

Maybe if there is anyone in the Denver Metro area willing to let me take a look, I could hook them up for being a guinea pig if it turns out to be doable?

Also, to set the tone for the future (I will make a legitimate BST thread for myself once I have kits tested and ready for sale) I did a bunch of math last night and I've settled on a sale price of $85 for my kits. I realize that is higher than what puppypunter was able to hit. The primary reason for the difference is not quality. His work is extremely high quality and everything I've received from him has worked perfectly and looks beautiful. Also his crimping experience greatly exceeds my own and he is my guru on all of this from design to implementation. The difference in price is purely based on my speed. I'm very slow (you might say painfully slow) with work like this because I'm a perfectionist and also rather new to sealed crimping and connectors. I don't like to make mistakes and waste material and I'm not satisfied with "good enough" I really want "the best I can possibly do." I suspect my throughput will improve with time and will re-evaluate the pricing if I get caught up with demand, but I'm setting this price to hopefully avoid a situation where I'm ignoring my real job to earn minimum wage building harnesses which meet some unnecessarily high standard I've decided to set for myself. Anyone who can get a puppypunter original should definitely go for it, it will be your best value. However, I think we can all agree that his talent is best focused on pioneering new designs rather than mass producing known solutions.

I will promise, though, that my kits will strive to be as good as his kits in every detail. I also highly encourage anyone interested in DIY to consider that option, though I'd be impressed if you can beat $85 without buying things in bulk.

Last, my plan is to build in batches of 20, one per month, for 5 months and hopefully the first batch ready by 3/1. If demand tapers off I'll stop making them, if it is steady I'll keep going, if it shows growth then I'll investigate a 3rd party to produce the main harnesses in bulk. I'll use the revenue from the first 10 of each batch to buy parts for the next batch of 20 as roughly 50% of the cost is parts. I will only take payment when I have harnesses built and tested and ready to ship out.

I can also attest that @daveeasa stuff will be top notch. I have full faith in him. These things were really his idea, I just took his idea, stared at @caribe makaira drawings for like 2 days until I understood them, then physically put it all together. These harnesses aren’t hard if you’re familiar with crimping, and I am more than happy to help anyone that sets out down that road! Sourcing all of the stuff is the biggest pain. I’m trying to get a a couple of the parts suppliers to carry a few more of the parts, so we could go from six (? I’m pretty sure that was our last count) to two or three suppliers. That would help the DIYers a lot because just getting this stuff shipped is expensive. But in the meantime, we will hopefully be able to satisfy those that don’t feel like doing it (or just don’t need 10000 emails from DHL every time a truck driver stops at a red light).

Found an easy workaround until my harness comes; just turn off your headlights while reversing.. works great
