They were getting heat from the IRS.

They would definitely need your SSN, but I'd have a great time making them get it.

Clown show, it sounds like there. You’ve gotta file a form 8300 for the IRS. Surprised the finance manager walking through you all the closing paperwork didn’t get that covered.

what’s the length of time between when you took possession of the vehicle and now? They’ve gotta be the ones to accommodate you when they mess up like this unless you’ve been stringing them along for weeks on end…

You paid cash you own it unless the IRS decides you don't, not the dealer.

What I don’t get- why would they send someone for the truck, but not someone to get the SSN?
I don’t blame you for being difficult after they quickly escalated to threats. If it’s titled in your name, my guess is- it would be considered theft, if they took it.

    You didn't write a check???

    You paid with CASH, cash?

If you'd written a check and they accepted it (they can easily verify funds with a phone call) they would not need your SS number... and I would never give mine to a dealership.

Reading his email he wasn't threatening like nasty, he was pleading. He simply stated the vehicle would have to go back if the IRS didn't get a SS number. Ten bucks say's the OP would have gotten a nice little letter from them as well.

Legally they couldn't take it, but who's to say they would process the dmv paperwork and give you the title. They're just covering their arse's as any cash payment over 10k has to be reported to the irs and traced for fraud, ect.

Just bring a cashier's check. It's a whole lot easier.

Even a check requires the IRS verification in my experience.

A direct transfer of money from a financial institution which has kept a paper trail negates any need for a SS number to be used. Only cash transactions over 10K need verification that would satisfy the IRS.

lol, from the dealers perspective. I'll bet they were starting to wonder if you had a social security #. How else do they explain a sweaty wad of cash to the irs?

Dumb dumbs in the finance box should have taken care of that during the sales transaction anyway.

Should have made them drive. Giving it via email wasn't smart.
No, the dealer could not come take a vehicle you paid cash for. If they did, you call the PD and file it as stolen and inform them you know who did it and ABSOLUTELY want to file charges. Then, you sue the crap out of them because you now have a recovered stolen vehicle and make them upgrade it free of charge to a different brand new vehicle.

Dealer shouldn’t have accepted cash in first place. Are you possibly Randy Moss running around paying straight cash homie?

Why not? My last truck purchase was a bank transfer but the one prior to that was a straight up hand written personal check from the old fashioned checkbook.
