I do not see the part you mention but what is with the dual muffler/exhaust on the 17.

Yea it’s definitely not a Tacoma. Looks like a tundra to me. Or it was a prototype.

I think the dual exhaust model is mislabeled as a Tacoma.

Are you referring to this piece?

    49.jpg

If so, my '16 OR had two of them that I ended up removing in order to install RCI skids.

Second pic is a Tundra, notice the frame bows out and is eliptical

    Tacoma frame is straight

This is the underside of a 2005 4Runner plain old SR5. They have those tubular extensions. I don't know why the Tacoma doesn't/didn't have them and why they do now (if they do, my 2008 does not).

My 2017 DCLB SR5 4x4 had those tubey extensiony thingies.

I removed them when I did my skid plates.

If I had to guess, they're probably there to deflect debris from flying up towards the tranny.

So are Tacos supposed to have them, did I get stiffed on my 2008 or is that a 3rd gen change? I do think they're some sort of protection, can't see reason otherwise for them.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
They look like anti-theft CAT guards.

Toyota calls them catalytic converter protectors. 2010+ FJs come with them too.

I've got mine. You can have 'em if you pay for shipping from the South Bay (San Jose). Shoot me a ping if you're interested

I notice several extra braces around the frame on the 3rd Gen, I believe they are there to strengthen the frame in crash tests.
