Its common knowledge that the cab and bed of a truck flex independently of each other, so hard mounting something to both the cab and camper shell racks sounds like a bad idea obviously. My question is, how much travel should I expect to see between the two? Assuming I was in a scenario that flexed the cab/bed as far apart from each other as possible, what would the measurement of that difference likely be?

For clarification, I'm looking at an XL RTT on a shortbed; instead of the overhang on the rear, it only makes sense to move the tent up towards the cab. I would obviously only hard mount it to the camper shell rack, but the overhanging tent on front would freely rest on 1-2 of the cab rack crossbars. This seems like a bad idea in my head, so wondering if others have done it, or if it would be in my better interest to use some sort of risers to mount the tent 1/2-1" (or however much flex may be possible) to alleviate the front of the tent from contacting the cab rack.

    Thoughts?

@uploadadventure you're the only person I was able to find in my search for an XL rtt on a shortbed, where the overhang was towards the cab. Did your tent actually physically rest on the cab bars or was your bedrack slightly higher? Hard to tell from the pics you've uploaded, but I know you've wheeled your truck in all its different variations while you had it, so would love your input.

I did, thanks! Ended up using some 1" risers on the topper rack to clear the cab rack.

Good deal! I had to do that as well with a tent. An FSR tent as I recall.

then I ended up trimming my uptop rack so that my tents fit right above it.
