OK, learned something new today. "shift flare" I previously stated I had none of the conditions mentioned in the TSB or all the other issues mentioned in this forum with my transmission.

except for the 2-3 shift flare. Honestly, it only happens when the truck is cold and it never bothered me. Seemed to me like it was just a transmission 'warming up' kind of thing. Again, it's so minor that I never thought twice about it.

Anyways, in dropping off my truck for the 10K service, I was originally against having the TSB done, but then I read about the 'shift flare' and thought - what the heck, i'll mention it and if they do the TSB, fine.. If they don't, it will be OK too.

I got a call a few hours later that they didn't see any issues with the transmission (true, drives fine) but they did the TSB anyways. I have no idea if the shift flare is gone, as it only happens once in the morning when I leave for work, but i'll check tomorrow.

The truck/transmission drives fine like before, but I do notice that it downshifts quicker, and overall has a livelier feel if you will. Again, I had no issues with the transmission prior. I only mentioned the shift flare to the service writer, because I read it here!

Anyways, no regrets here. Truck is driving nice like before.

Does anyone know the TSB number for the trans shifting, mine shifts like crap. I have a 16 DCLB SR5 with the V6 and the AC60E trans?

Two places where your truck can be assembled/built. . . . . Texas or Baja, Mexico

Based on my 50 miles or so of driving after the update, I believe it will help improve MPG.

Before the update it would not even try to rev a high gear out upon acceleration, it would just jump into second gear and rev in the 3-4k+ RPM's (not good for MPG, not good for the trans, and it was not even trying to use the low end power of the engine... it drove like a Civic).

After the update, it seems like it's staying in a high gear longer before downshifting, so when you slightly get on the gas pedal it will try to rev out 3rd or 4th gear instead of jumping to a lower gear right away. The update made shifting smoother and limited its tendency to skip to high RPMs. It's utilizing more of the low end power and lower RPM's, all leading me to believe MPG will improve maybe by a mile or two per gallon.

We'll see over the next week or two. I do the same commute every day, and pre update I was getting 16.4 MPG.

I don't have the R->D issue, but I do have the cruise control issues, but honestly not too bad. However, my major problem is this:

When I come to a stop, say at a red light, it will downshift normally. Then as I'm almost to a stop, it seems to upshift and harshly lurches forward. When I took it in for 5k service a couple of months ago and talked to the tech manager, he seemed to think it wasn't axle wrap, but the shifting patterns. He did mention that there was rumor of a TSB to address similar issues.

I wonder if this TSB would address it.

Just got this TSB done yesterday afternoon. I didn't have the R->D or P->D issues, or the hunting gears issue, just the problem where the transmission would stay in 4th gear while going up a hill with cruise control on and not shift back out of 4th gear.

As far as I can tell it doesn't stay in 4th after the crest of a hill anymore, while using cruise control. The transmission now has a tendency to stay in gears longer, especially noticeable in 2nd and 3rd gear. It also takes 5-10% less throttle than before to downshift to 5th from 6th. For typical acceleration I found it to be an overall improvement, albeit relatively minor. As far as fuel economy goes, I've seen a 0.2mpg loss, but then again I've been mostly driving around trying to get a feel for the acceleration and testing the cruise control up inclines so this is likely influenced most by my driving habits. I'm still averaging right around 19.5mpg mixed.

One thing worth noting is that it doesn't quite know what gear to be in some of the time, just like when I first bought the truck. This is probably due to the transmission learning being reset. I'm not really looking forward to having another ~1500 miles before it "learns" my driving habits again, I was actually pretty happy with the way it shifted before. I was expecting this though.

Overall I'm happy with the change, like others have said it's a little like having ECT on for the first couple gears. I won't be able to have really useful feedback until I've been able to put a few more thousand miles on the truck.

Took mine in tuesday for poor mpg and high revs with cruise control on. They told me yesterday they were running a diagnostic as per Toyota's rec. Called me this morning and said theres nothing wrong with the truck come get it. They will not perform the TSB as it doesnt apply to my VIN range. Im not real impressed with my first ever Toyota service on my $40k 3 week old truck.

Sorry if I missed it, but was your fluid normal or low? I have the same build date, seems to me that most of the low fluid issues come from build dates prior to this April but I could be very wrong about that.

    For what it's worth:
I did not have the problem you described. However, immediately after the TSB (which included clearing the Adaptive Learning at my request), I experienced the same downshift pattern when coming to a stop. I noticed it pulling to a stop to leave the dealer, and the first few stops thereafter. HOWEVER, it very quickly went away....like within a day.

So I wonder if maybe you have a problem with the adaptive memory on your truck not "learning" the downshift pattern correctly. Or maybe your driving style demands an aggressive downshift.

Don't want to send you down a rathole, just thought it was worth mentioning. I would get the TSB, and I would have the Adaptive Learning memory cleared. I had to fight them to do this, as it is not a part of the TSB.

Interesting - although my VIN is listed and is a V6, my dealer says this TSB applies to the 2GR engine only (4-cyl). On the actual TSB it shows engine applicability to be 4-cyl only. What's the word here on that?

    Registered to provide some feedback:

I was experiencing the R-D delay and funky shifting, searching, etc. Nothing that really bothered me too much, but it was a little obnoxious.

I had the TSB performed in Tallahassee, Florida, on Monday. I think I was one of the first to come in and request it at this dealership. I gave the SA the TSB number, and it was performed no questions asked. I was there for a little over an hour. I noticed a difference immediately, and over the last several days I've had no R-D delay and the shift points seem much closer to the 2nd gen Tacomas I've driven (my brother had an '09, and I test drove several before deciding on the 2016). It absolutely drives differently, and much improved in my opinion, than it did on the day that I bought it and each day since.

Too soon to tell on gas mileage, but it seems about the same.

Basically, the TSB worked as advertised. Service was great and I'm pleased. I've had no other problems with the truck since I bought it (no hood issues, diff noise, leaf spring noise, etc.).

I have NOT had the trans fluid checked. Honestly, the shifting issues and R-D delay screamed software issue to me and I was confident a TSB would be issued eventually.

I had the Fluid checked and was told it was good. I've been round and round with them about the delay early on and had poor results, so it's nice to know there is someone else in Tallahassee who got somewhere. I will be going for the update too. Who was your service manager if you don't mind me asking?

    Thanks!

Good to know your fluid was good!

His name was Joe Trozzo. Seemed like a nice guy. I told him what was going on, gave him the TSB number, and that was it. A little over an hour later I was out the door. I don't know if they tried to reproduce it or not, but I can't imagine people coming in and requesting a TSB if they weren't experiencing a problem.

It's not like it turned the V6 into a V8 or anything, but it is a noticeable improvement.

Sorry if this has already been posted... what is the VIN range for the transmission TSB?
    Thanks!

I had mine done this morning. Dealer did want to confirm the problems first. They said they didn't notice much of an issue but did it anyway because I came specifically asking for it to be done. However the tech said that he noticed a big difference in the transmission after it was finished on a test drive.

For me only limited driving so far. Mostly city. Small trip in the mountains by my house but no road trip cruise control test yet. Transmission responsiveness around town is much much better. Shifts like prior cars and trucks that I have owned. Better off the line acceleration and doesn't try to shift too early. Going up the mountain noticed that it held the correct gear (in this case 4th) while going up rather than trying to drop to 5th, lose speed, and then down shift to 4th again. Much more pleasant to drive. MPGs seem about the same. 16.5 up the mountain. Didn't look at it when I came home. Ranging from 18-26 for short around town trips.

Overall I am very pleased with the change and I still loved the truck before the TSB. It is just better now. No new problems have cropped up today associated with the re-flash.

So more update on mine since I got to drive to work and do the R-D from a cold start.
There is basically ZERO lag now when cold going from R-D and the truck just drives so much better now. Also When I would stop on a hill and pointed down the hill and start going the truck would almost seem like its slipping starting off down the hill. The TSB seems to fix that as well. I will say I had a little gripe about the trans before the update and it was the only issue I had with the truck. Now the TSB seems to have solved all the issues and I have zero complaints about this truck now

How does this TSB work? Do they send you something in the mail, or should I be pro-active and call my dealer?

I printed it off and took it to the dealer. They will not call you like a recall.
