The challenge, for some, is getting the dealer to blindly agree to applying the TSB. Since it is not a Recall, technically they are supposed to validate the symptoms before they will be authorized by corporate to perform the repair/update. They will not perform the update without authorization from corporate because to do so would mean the dealership pays out of pocket. Now sure they could "lie" and say the conditions exist on your vehicle to get corporate's approval. I think in many cases they're doing just that...because many of these common transmission issues that so many of us are having are difficult to replicate without driving the truck in different environments and they often occur at random times.

OK, so I just picked it up from the dealer and drove it back to work....about 5 miles. There is a difference, but it's not night and day. The engine still feels underpowered, but it does shift a little better. Off the line I couldn't tell a difference. Shifts are quicker though. It seems to have a more positive shifting feel, less halfassed. It seemed to hold the gear a little better too.

These are all very subtle changes from the baseline. I'll report more after my drive home, but my quick look on it is that it's better, but not significantly better as some posts would indicate.

And yes the SA was a total jerk. I asked about a sticker under the cowling and he looked at me and said "we just got the TSB and we don't have any stickers". He hands me the fob and says " I hope your happy with it (snide).

Had my truck reflashed today. Shift flare has been fixed. Now if only they could release a fix for the cruise control as like the one for the v6s ide be a happy customer

I think for those who've already had their rigs in for Transmission checks and fluid top-offs, regardless if it was "fixed" or "not low", they shouldn't have to justify anything.
    Obviously there was prior concern.
But that is just my 2 pesos.
We all know the stealerships will try everything they can to get out of work or to make money.

This is what I'm worried about, given all the grief I went through before with two dealerships. But fingers are crossed since I'm scheduled for my 10k service tomorrow and going to the same dealership that had the truck three days for these issues well before the TSB came out. Hoping I'll just have to mention it and they'll do it while the truck is being serviced, but it's Toyota, and my experience with them is that they seem to go out of their way to make it difficult for the customer.

Funny thing, I actually called Toyota Customer Service last week (again, before the TSB was known/released) and spoke to them about never really being able to resolve my transmission issues, and told them how several others were offered extended warranties for having issues similar to mine, and if they had any proposed fix for it, and wanted the associate I spoke to to log this call in my record. I asked for a case/file number and she said that her system was (conveniently) down, but assured me that someone would follow up with me on Monday or Tuesday with a call. Monday and Tuesday came and went last week and no call.

Yep, I remember my guy and even have a case of beer for him for tomorrow. Even though they didn't fix my issue I will say that the rep helping me was a good guy. The rest of the bunch there at that dealership and the people who helped me at Toyota Customer Service, not so much.

So I drove it home from work and my position on the update hasn't changed. If anything it's a bit more pessimistic. It shifts a little better but I think this is just not the right engine trans combo. My buddy has a Canyon and now my truck feels the same. Overall I'm not impressed, even with the new flash.

Perhaps some folks had really bad issues and my trans issues were minor.

I'm sure it's just me. I'll hang on and hope Ford hits a home run. FWIW, this is my 4th Taco, so I'm dedicated, but this is weak, real weak.

If the Ranger looks halfway decent I'll be running to Ford too

I really don't get the people saying these trucks don't have any power. If you wanted a power house, you should have bought something with a V8. I came from a Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited with some work done to the 360. It had power, it was fun, no the Tacoma isn't as fast but it has more than enough power.

I've owned 4 Tacoma's. Each one had more power and was better all around. This one is nice but the engine and trans are not keeping up. It feels like a sponge.

This is my first Tacoma and I love it. I'm a big fan of the 2nd gen body style also though even though I've never owned one. All I know is I've owned A LOT of cars and trucks over the years. Everything from a well built 79 trans am in the 11s to a POS tercel to more Jeeps than I can count. The Tacoma is definitely not a rocket however I didn't expect it to be. For what I'm doing with it, it's more than enough. I will say that I test drove a TRDOR that was a pig yet my SR model would walk all over it. Really not sure why?

Bull pucky. These trucks are UNDERPOWERED for their class and they perform and feel that way. Thats the argument. Nobody is comparing to a full size.

    Me too.

This isn't hard. Build a solid truck that acts like it wants to be the best. This one is a let down.

It shouldn't even be close and Toyota didn't do it, period.

I made a mistake assuming they'd do that. My mistake and I should've known better.

It is disappointing. All of the issues and then on top of that it LOOKS the part but drives like a dog. You have a lot of untapped potential in this truck and it will likely never be realized.

    I'm in with you man.

On the fence waiting for a competitor to capitalize on this engineering misstep.
