That's something I should do, but my yeti cup fits perfectly in there without the foam things

Ended up cutting a hole in the skid while it was off and painted it again. Looks good!

This was one of the most helpful/inspirational builds when I first picked up my 1st gen. Hope it's running like a top you're still enjoying it!

Thanks man that means a lot! It's still doing great, approaching 100,000 miles here shortly! I should be regearing here by the end of the summer also! Not much left to do to the truck besides wheel it and enjoy it!

Don't regear unless you're going to 35's. Trust me, not worth it with a manual

Really? I've noticed a little difference with 285's, going up hills on the highway I'm gonna have to downshift which I have yet to do. So I could see this a little, I'll wait until I go off-road

I loved my gearing with 4.10's and 255/85/16's. Freeway, off-road, everything was great. I'm on 4.88's with a manual and 35's now and freeway blows hahah. I'm going to 37's soon, but still, not great haha. Off-road I'm sure it will be great

Really? I'm on 5.29's with a manual on 35's and freeway isn't bad. sitting around 3500 rpm at 75-80 mph. Only when I do 90 is when it's shitty, around 4000 rpm. But goddamn is it nice having the low range offroad, especially in the rocks.

I like mine in the 2500 range on the freeway and I'm currently at 2900. Gas mileage. Low range is low enough for me until I add dual cases next year.

Yea I was on the fence about 456/488 but definitely happy I went with the 488 (but I'm an auto so it's a bit different)

Interesting, with tires bumpers skids and ac on it takes a lot to get it up to speed. I remembered it being much more easier when stock and wanted it back and thought that regearing would do that.

    You're crazy.

Regearing helps so much when you have a rig with armor and larger tires.

I'd hate to have 35s and 4.88s you have now much less 37s. Should have gone 5.29s.

I have 255s with no armor and I'm dying to regeared on my other truck. But I live in a mountainous area. If it was flat everywhere it would be okay. Not great though.

Exactly. With armor, elevation, and 33s with the 410s my truck was a slug.. even unloaded.

Super happy I went with the 488s over the 456s. Plus easier on the trans (auto)

thanks for the input when I was deciding too Monte :hattip:

My truck is fast with front and rear bumpers, full belly skids, sliders, rear storage drawers, full size spare. Troy and I don't live at elevation. I also don't want my RPM's through the roof on the freeway

Edit-with 4.10's I never felt the need for more power. With 35's I was getting 20 mpg and could downshift to 4th and hit 100 to pass anyone I wanted without any drama. I only regeared to get a front locker and my crawl ratio back.

Elevation makes a huge difference. Before my regear my truck was already kind of slow at 5000ft where I live. When I went to CO or northern NM I was downshifting like crazy from the further power loss

I live at sea level and I was getting like 14 mpg's with 4.10's on 35's. I know the 4runner and tacoma share a lot of similarities, but maybe not the final drive ratio? Just like my second gen buddies think I'm crazy going to 5.29's but they typically can get away with 4.56's on 35's, while most of us need 4.88's at minimum.
