I don't think my truck on 31s could hit 100mph in 4th. To pass anyone I had to drop to 3rd.

    Your situation sounds completely untypical.

I couldn't even use 5th gear when I had 35s and 4.10s for the short time I did.

Ultimately though the #1 reason for picking gears that should be taken into consideration is how you plan on using the truck.

Regearing is still by far the best mod I have done. So worth it. Troy, for how your truck is currently configured, I think you will be very happy with 4.56s.

Thank you, with everything I've read so far that's what I thought also. I'll probably be regearing by the end of August. I drove another manual with 4.56 and it did feel better. @JTB727

Those of you questioning, connor has a weird way of keeping his momentum up off-road....but for me personally, i still get into situations occasionally that I feel 4.88s with the manual would be nice...

I HATED my truck with 4.10s and 33's with armor. It was a dog. Going up to payson i would be in 3rd gear and climbing the hills at 50mph.... I love my gearing change. Best thing i ever did to the truck. Especially because i went from open open to locked front and rear.

I love my 4.88s, but wheeling at elevation it still is hardly enough. I end up riding the clutch to get up obstacles. Luckily I have lots of practice doing so from all the awful time wheeling with 4.10s. Excellent on the roads though, except the interstate which I hardly ever drive.

I love 5.29s with the manual and 35s. Brett and i did a "drag" race in 4lo and its almost exactly the same as 4.88s with 33s and a manual. It is amazing offroad. Low gearing is the shit. And i never ever have to down shift to pull big hills anymore. Hell i can accelerate in 5th up hill now and that was before i added boost.

I'm on 35s and 5.29s and the gearing is absolutely perfect. I know that's not where Troy is going with his build, but the point is that regearing (and in my case, overgearing) was the best "bang for the buck" mod that I've done to my truck. It's very peppy around town off the line, it runs around 3300-3500 at 75-80mph, and it's absolutely killer in 4LO. I have a crawl box that will get installed someday, but for 90% of my wheeling, it's not remotely necessary with my gears. When I get a SC, the truck will absolutely scream.

The caveat is that I don't care about mileage beyond being a metric for the health of the engine and miles until empty. I have a DD, so it's not a focus for me. So having the 3.4 at those higher RPMs on the freeway doesn't bother me, and in fact means that I can pull up the passes in 4th gear, no problem. And that's with the RTT and gear.

    ---

TL;DR: Regearing is the shit if you have the coin to pull it off. (Especially if it gets you locked front and rear).

Damnit! Going back and forth between 4.56s and 4.88s now :annoyed:

4.88 and 33s in a manual is slightly overgeared about as much as the 5.29/35/manual combo, right?

4.88s for an offroad rig. 4.56 for a DD/weekend warrior.

    Yep. Almost exactly.

well for now it's a DD/weekend warrior, but it won't stay that way which has me leaning towards 4.88s now in that I don't wanna regear twice unless it's for 35's (which at this time is not in the plans)

go 4.88s. I think with the roof rack alone you'd be glad you did.

I think it'll help a ton off-road too. Have yet to put any dirt miles on the new tires hopefully soon now that school is done

I got my entire set up for 500 bucks with 456s. If i paid full price I would have gone 4.88.

+1 to both of these. I went 5.29 to avoid a crawl box and I most definitely nearly accomplished my goal. Even on the harder trails I basically point the truck where I want it to go and it goes.
