The cut bedsides thing in't for everyone, I did it on my old jeep and likes the look... makes it really easy to build wrap around armor ;)

I just do it because I like it, did it to my jeep, did it to the first bed on the taco, and now the second one. It really doesn't net much more clearance, unless you wrap the thing with a single piece of 1.5-2" tube, but even then the overall clearance is pretty negligible. I just like that I can wrap the bumper around by welding the top of the bumper on a single flat plane.

I like the idea of cutting the bedsides, but I'm personally not a fan of just putting a piece of tube around and calling that a "bumper." Just doesn't click with me, then again, if other people like that, then more power to them. I'm thinking about maybe in the future talking to Eric at Relentless and seeing if could build me a high clearance rear bumper with bed protection and swingout for my Taco. I think it'll be killer, but I'm loving my rear wrap around by him so I'm in no rush.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Yeah I wouldn't be doing tube, I'm not a fan of tube bumpers. But I think a super high clearance plate bumper is in my future.

I can see where the mod would be less restriction on airflow. I just don't like that it pulls hot air out of the engine compartment. I like that the OEM setup draws cooler air out of the fender even though it is more restricted.

Originally there were crappy LEDs in the bottom, I'm replacing those LEDs with switchback LEDs. I'm cutting out where the orginal LEDs were mounted and replacing it with a diffused panel. So, hopefully it looks cool.

Love the switchback LED idea. Looking sick so far. You ever get the other side open?

If I felt like spending more time welding I could burn something together for ya.

But I'm too damn busy :|

Yep! Took about two days working on and off for the first one and once I figured it out it took about 40 min to get the other one apart.

Welding classes are great. I love how they teach you EVERYTHING. I've been to one, but I just don't have the time right now to attend weekly to the one near me. Maybe this summer, but I'd prefer to just wheel my truck this summer and get an IFS skid from Relentless Fab. She's been a mall crawler too long.
