Watching the movies back to back. I'll say the new Dune is a beautiful masterpiece visually. The minecraft shield fighting in the first one is so dated along with pretty much all the visual effects. It definitely surpasses the original for me. Nostalgia is the only reason I'll continue to watch it every once in a while.

I meant to update the thread saying that I watched it. I was kinda "meh" afterwards because the movie ended just as the good part was starting.

    Incredible visuals, however.

I watched it on a small laptop and feel I did myself a great disservice, need to go see it on the big screen

For sure. I watched it on a 50" TV then went to my local non-IMAX theater (small town - no more than 15 ppl with me at the time!). Even with the small town tech, the sound and visuals were 100% better. It improved my overall appreciation of it.

Unrelated, I hope Cap comes back - I was looking forward to his opinion considering he was such a staunch supporter of the Lynch version

It's 4k on HBOMax so you should definitely watch on a larger tv.

issue there is that the only time I get the TV to myself is after the toddler is in bed, so then I have to keep it way low with subtitles...I think I need to go to the theaters for this one even though I haven't been in over 2 years lol. This movie feels like it would be quite an experience on the big screen though.

I've tried to rewatch it twice but I keep falling asleep? Maybe I'll try in the middle of the day instead of the middle of the night?

I did watch it on my 55" 4K TV, and it was nice. I do wish I had a sound bar or something better than the stock speakers.

    I’m back.

    1. The first time I watched it, I didn’t love it. I liked it - but I didn’t love it. I found I spent all my time comparing it to the books or the 1984 movie, both of which I love.

    2. The second time I watched it, I caught more nuance and little details, I found that I liked it more this time.

    3. The THIRD time I watched it, I fucking loved it. Can’t wait for part 2.

Im dying to see who gets officially cast as:
    - Emperor Shaddam
    - Princess Irulan
    - Feyd Rautha

Anyone else feel gypped out of seeing a third stage guild navigator?

^ This, for sure. Too many details were lost.

    For example:
    • the betrayal of Dr. Yueh, trained as a Suk, was unimaginable and therefore so much more powerful. I caught and understood the diamond mark on the Ornithopter but can only imagine how many didn’t.
    • The Book baron is way more sinister and despicable, grotesque.
    • Didn’t Paul’s duel with Jamis occur in the Sietch were he gave moisture to the dead? That rattled my adolescent brain for sure.
Feyd’s gonna be an interesting casting.

    Welcome back @CaptAmerica :hattip:

And didn't Liet Keynes die later? During her search for water?

Nope - it happened before they made the trek. It wasn't until after they got to the sietch and they started funeral services that...

I only had the previous movie to compare it to (didn't read the books) and found it somewhat underwhelming and lacking. I figured it must be following the book more than the previous movie so I accepted it as that. Like @CaptAmerica I rewatched it and liked it more. I do hope they'll make part 2.

I thought the movie was great. Watched it at home and still felt like I got a great experience (we do have a pretty nice TV). The whole mood of the movie was how I pictured it from reading the book. As others have mentioned I think they left too much out regarding the Baron Harkonnen and how evil he is. Everything else I thought pretty closely followed the book with little changes here/there that didn't detract from the story. Excited for part 2.

I'm just glad everyone wasn't using an inner voice like the original, but that also helped the story I guess so it served a purpose.
