I used to use Starship Troopers for military professional development for junior NCOs and officers. It's an outstanding treatise on civic and moral responsibility disguised as science fiction.

Now that the flood gates are open, anyone else think the premise of the Stargate TV series was a rip off of Frederick Pohl's Gateway books without the Heechee technology? :annoyed:

Footfall first (Alien invasion) , then Mote in God's Eye and the sequel The Gripping Hand (very unusual aliens).

    Other good Niven/Pournelle collaborations:

Lucifer's Hammer (Comet strikes the Earth)

Legacy of Heorot (Human colony on a new world encounters scary critter)

More but that's off the top of my head.

I've not heard of the Gateway series.
    Thanks! I'll start there.

Fallen Angels- kinda dated, but has to deal with global freezing, ISS inhabitants are their own country and are at "war" with the earth, and what happens when SF fans help some crashed astronauts. Pretty funny, but has a lot of inside jokes since it has to do with SF fandom.

Inferno and Out of Hell (sp)- a retelling of Dante's Divine Comedy, very interesting take

Burning Tower series- I never read it and don't know much about it.

David Brin’s uplift books. I want to see Fiben Bolger and Uthacalthing pulling pranks on the Gubru.

What octane is best for my sandworm? I looked in the owners manual but it didn't say and there is no sticker on the inside of the fuel door.

You know, I've read it, and I wasn't impressed comparing it to Starship Troopers.

Ah man. I'm the opposite. I loved Armor, far more than Starship Troopers.

    Yeah.
Shit, just saw this thread, Cap. I'm a huge fan of the books as well. Tough movies to do, would like to see a trilogy that carries it through Children of Dune at least. I like that Tool paid homage to it on their latest album.

Kind of meh on Starship Troopers. Maybe the books are better?

oh im pretty damn excited about it. i just hope that they dont rush too many things. thats the problem with turning a complex book/series into a 2 hour movie. you lose so much that made the books great. ive always wanted to see it as a series like game of thrones, but where it stays as close to the actual book as possible. oh and not ruin all things good in the last few episodes....

Apple TV already has a Foundation series, and HBO just did Bradbury.

I’d love to see the robots books done as mini-series like True Detective. Caves of Steel has such a cool and interesting vibe to it.

I love the movie. LOVE IT. I have come to peace with it. Is it truly faithful to the books? No. Does it capture the spirit? Mostly. Does it, standing on its own merits if the book didn't exist, present a future world that is awesome, incredible, and frightening? Hell yeah!

Plus Patrick Fucking Stewart as Gurney Halleck.
