I loved the movie as well, but I knew the books. I can see how someone not familiar with the books might be a bit lost and not really like it. They just don't have the time to do all the character development, explain all the factions involved and their relationships with each other, and how the Dune universe kind of works. Knowing the books gives you that background. My wife loves sci-fi, and she likes the movie, but she was a bit lost -- I had to explain a lot to her. Each time we watch it she has more questions. I think they did pretty well given the short format.

What did it in for me was what Lynch did with Weirding Way...

But then again, Patrick Fucking Stewart as Gurney Halleck was pretty cool...

The weirding way was a really simple trick way to describe how the Fremen were shaped in the toughest environment survivable so that the changes became genetic, coupled with a lethal martial art and discipline so woven into every facet of society that it made tai chi look like kindergarten. The Emperor's Sardaukar, even having survived Salusa Secundus, were no match for the Fremen. Arrakis is just that much more brutal, and the Fremen just that much better adapted. That doesn't translate to a motion picture. Hell, it would take several episodes of a series to get this across.

So, they create this cockamayme weirding module thingamajig that no one has and weave it into the story such as it represents a way in which the Fremen can be so much better than everyone else no matter how many foes are thrown at them. In Lynch's Dune, it works.

    FIFY

But then again, he could take the time to sprinkle elements of it (it's been a while since I've seen it) like the Fremen springing up from the desert sands. I don't think it would have taken as much effort as you spell out considering the amount of material not included.

They cut 35 some-odd minutes out of the director’s cut, and 40 minutes from that to get to the screen cut.

Where could they add anything remotely nuanced?

Production value was lacking, but the series SciFy did covered the nuance very well.

You’re obviously WAY more into the movie than I ever was or will be.

I don’t have more to say about it except I agree the Syfy miniseries did a good job sticking to the source material.

Looking forward to this. I can't believe it's been so long since the original movie but what I find even more unbelievable is that no one has ever made one of my other favorites, Stranger in a Strange Land. That wouldn't even have been hard to do.

Shit, maybe I should do it. Who's got DiCaprio's number?

I used to think Jack Nicholson would make a great Jubal. Now I don’t know. Brian Cox maybe?

I don’t think Leo would be a very good Mike. I think they’d have to cast an unknown so anyone who hasn’t read the book doesn’t project past roles into the character. Mike is truly unique. Ya grok?

We just have different styles of directing I reckon.

Leo? He’s pushing 50. Unless you’re looking at him for Jubal?

Hmmmmm, I could see that. Single rich man surrounded by beautiful smart women? He’d work for free.

Thanks for the trailer teaser @CaptAmerica :hattip:

I checked some google results and one mentioned the movie was intended as a duology. Have you heard this was going to be a two-parter?

The reason I didn’t trust the article is because they referenced Paul as a “young prince”.

Yes, it is indeed a two-parter. I wonder where they’ll separate. A good point is where they escape from the Harkonnen and join the Fremen.

    Mostly dust and dirt.
I don’t know if any film can do those brilliant books justice. But I’m looking forward to the new film.

So hyped for this, but at the same time, I'm keeping my expectations tempered. Trying to fully translate books as dense & all encompassing as Dune into a movie is impossible. But I think Denis Villeneuve & Hans Zimmer are the perfect people for the challenge...

Not a fan of waiting another year or so for part deux.
