Mine was in a flash very heavy downpour when closed right before we headed out for our first trip. It was bone dry when I opened it up at the camp site. We had some light sprinkles there as well and it was fine. Haven't experienced a heavy downpour while it was open or snow yet.

Yes. Guale Mesa at Big Bend Ranch State Park. Warrior did great but I didn't sleep good because of crazy gusts all night. My 11 yr old slept right through it. Easily gusting 30+mph or more. And I did not have to add the tent supports/braces that came with the tent. Never worried about the clam shell shutting down!

Edit: no rain just wind. I HATE camping in rain. Hence my reasoning for falling hard for the desert southwest...AND DRY conditions! :)

Thanks for the info everyone, thats good news! I have been unsure about getting one of the rtt's because of the stability being that high in some rougher weather. Thanks again!

I have a video from a guy who slept in Death Valley with his estimate of 40 mph winds. He had to lash it down. I’ll take a screen shot and see if I can find a good way to post the video.

If he had taken off the rain fly it wouldn’t have needed all the bungees but he just got that tent earlier in the week.

This gentleman actually was living in his tent with his pup traveling across the country. Not sure if he’s on TW or not.

Interesting!! That's going to be me in about 6 years if all goes well.

Those black lines that are part of the tent....I now strap them across the rain fly and back around to sides of the tent - tied down tight against the tent. I learned my lesson at Guale and implemented this approach with the straps a few weeks ago at Devils River. Definitely helped with the flapping.

was aiming the hard shell against the wind not an option here? Seems like a bit of overkill.

From the story I heard. He was already all set up and the wind started whipping late / early morning.
He was in a draw and pretty much had no where to go.

That is awesome... I hope to be ordering one here in the very near future. Currently bouncing back and forth between the ultra lite or the warrior.

After speaking more with the wife, it looks like we will be pushing more towards the grunt. Has anyone here had that one and tried it out?

Yep! They have some in stock. You’ll like it. There are a few people out there who have them and really like them.

I will be sure to put my opinion up, i am really looking forward to it. The next big task is to figure out the best way to store this thing. Im thinking of hanging it from the ceiling in the garage...Anyone else, please chime in and let me know what you have done for storage!

Lots of people do that. There is a RTT thread here that has lots of good options.

Edit. Pictures above are grunt. Just wanted to make a quick note that DA made sure that the grunt has the lowest profile soft shell they could get.

This used to be amusing but I’m really starting to feel bad for this dude now…

Anyways, here’s a recent pic from Kirk Creek Campground near Big Sur. So nice to get out of the desert for a few days!

    E4551994-4085-402A-AE09-949B0A12AD77.jpg

Edit: @zachslimmer I’ll echo @texas angler ’s comments re: wind. I’ve been out in the Warrior in the desert with some 30+ mph sustained gusts and it was definitely unpleasant and loud, but the tent itself felt solid. Can’t comment on rain as I live in Southern California… lol

That’s awesome and thanks for the input! I’m over here in NC, the goal is to put the tent through every season. From wind and sand on the coast at the beach to high wind and rain on the western side of the state is the mountains. I’m definitely excited to see how the grunt holds up, I would imagine it may not fair quite as well as it’s hard shell counterparts but I’m sure it’ll be fine either way……if not, ratchet straps and bungies are always near by.

    Looks good!

I’d love to camp close to the ocean like that. I bet it’s peaceful.
