My apologies, but the white paint from Toyota is a gamble, as is several other colors. Having a truck detailed by anyone but yourself, is also a gamble.

Yeah....I have a hard time paying someone to wash and wipe down my ride.

Its not a high tech task. I'm also not running a show truck or driving a truck for show.

Seems like white Toyotas always have issues with paint quality...

That's an obvious buffing burn. The paint is no thinner there than on the flat surfaces (maybe slightly thinner, but that's not the issue). This isn't an issue with the white, it would likely have happened with any color. I used to do auto paint, and most cars were still lacquer at the time, which dries dull and requires wet sanding and buffing for the shine. You ALWAYS stay away from raised creases like that when buffing, they will burn through in a heartbeat as that is where all the pressure is going.

Buffing with compound removes paint. That's how it works. Not wise to do often, and every paint job has a limited number of times it can be buffed before the paint is gone.

This isn’t a paint quality issue. This is a detailer issue.

I know, but I used to be a detailer, and I along with several other details can tell you that white paint on Toyotas can have issues; It tends to turn chalky and even peel. I do agree with you that in this case it was a detailer issue :)

I am well aware of the white paint issues. So far my truck has been holding up with just rock chips, no peeling yet. It appears 17 model year Tacoma's from Mexico are having the most issues with peeling based on Facebook groups and the consolidated thread on here (unfortunately what I have). I am a bit concerned that this will expedite the existing paint issues we are seeing along creases. Have been toying the idea of trading it in to not deal with issues down the road. Was originally planning on keeping this truck for a long time.

On my 2016 super white the paint is thinnest at the top of the bed. The rest is thin too but there in particular measuring with one of those $80 or so paint depth guages.

Why trade it and spend 35-40k on a new truck. Drop 5k into a base coat/ clear coat paint job and call It day. Then drive it till it dies.

a dealer is offering 37k for my truck when I only paid 36k. Found a new 2022 that is selling for 41k with no markup a few hours away. Would be about 5 to 6k out the door to erase 70k miles and to get a brand new truck.

It makes financial sense but I’m not sure if I want to go through all the hassles

It’s called opportunity cost. Why would I drop 5k into a repaint for a truck with about 70k miles when I can spend 5k and get a brand new truck with new paint and 0 miles. Either way I’m spending around 5k

It’s called staying in debt. But hey too each their own. That’s why I asked if your current truck is paid for and all it will cost is 5k and the new truck is paid for then yeah I’d do it. But if means 5 more years of payments then no.

Car has been paid and 5k would be paid via cash… honestly a different topic than I made this thread about.

FYI Low interest debt is a good thing. Example who would pay cash for a house when interest rates are 2%? I’d make more in the market with the capital.

Some folks are insinuating that Super White is thinner for some reason and it is not. To further clarify, the total thickness of the paint on all Toyota colors is the same.

Getting back to the root cause, high spots will always have thinner paint and low spots will have more paint. That's just the way paint builds up as it's applied - assuming we're talking atomized application. (E-coat primer builds much more evenly.) That said, all detailers need to be aware of this and be careful near high spots or panel edges. Take an inexperienced detailer with a wool pad and aggressive cut polish on a rotary and turn them loose on a high spot and this type of damage can occur very quickly.

If it were me, I'd get the entire fender repainted by a reputable body shop - never a dealer body shop - and have the dealer that caused the damage to pay for the repairs.

If he burned through the paint, he had to go through the clear coat first. So, if it has a clear coat, it will eventually begin to flake. He should pay to have it painted by a reputable shop. Don't let him get out of it.

Couple things in here to unpack. The detailer burned through, odds are he had the buffer at the wrong angles, you want the pad spinning off the line. If your buffing pad rotates onto the body line it cuts much faster and will burn it. What you DONT want to do is have someone repaint the whole fender, the whole thing will get re cleared but only color in that one area until coverage is achieved.

I’m not exactly sure but the super white very well could be thinner, there would be no reason Toyota (or any company) would add unnecessary topcoats of base once it’s covered. High metallics, pearls, and three stages need several layers for depth and color but a high solid could be more thinly applied from the factory.

Super white is not a traditional 2 stage paint with white then clear. It has white and clear mixed together. So no clear coat to burn through
