    Hi, Newby here.
Just curious whether anyone has installed any kind of locker in a 2WD truck. If you have, what did it cost? Thanks, Pete

I have a 2001 PreRunner 2WD and bought the PowerTrax auto locker about 4-5 years ago. Very happy with it. I did not install it myself. Bit of a pain because you don't have access to the rear of the "pumpkin" like a standard bolt on. The drive shaft needs to be dropped. Not hard, just time consuming. I would suggest getting an estimate for the work by the shop actually "looking" at it first.

This is true, but even more of a hassle is having to remove the rear axle shafts (actually just pulling them out about 2 inches).

Pulling the diff yourself would save you a lot of labor costs. Then figure about $150 to $300 in labor to install any kind of traction device into your diff.

A Detroit/Eaton unit (auto or LSD) which is a more costly unit AND more labor to install, replaces the entire carrier. Powertrax or Lockrite types do not (cheaper unit and less labor to install).

Yeah, I remember how miffed the shop was when I went to pick my truck up after the install. I had asked them for a quote in person and said I have my truck right outside here if you want to look at it. They're all "no, we've done these before we don't need to see it, thanks though" and gave me a price. Turns out that they did lots of Ram's and Sierra/F150's, but never a Toyota. I think they quoted me 1.5 hrs. labour but spent 6 or 7 hours on it. They stuck by their original quote though.(hence being so miffed!). not my fault.
