I own a 2011 Toyota Tacoma Sport and was thinking of installing an aftermarket rear differential (Detroit TrueTrac LSD) I hear good things about Detroit helping with traction. Anyone have any experience with LSD installed there Tacoma?

I mostly do overland type of off roading, which includes moderate water crossing, uneven terrain and rocks. My truck is NOT set up for rock crawling. I just feel I don't do enough hardcore off roading to justify ARB rear locker but would like to get something that can get me better traction "just incase".

Had one in the front of a full size Bronco. Loved it. Had a Detroit locker in the rear and wished I had done the True Trac front and rear.

I've done this on my Gen 1 Tacoma, and I put it front and rear on my 89 Pickup. Definitely worth it IMO for a daily driver/weekend off road warrior that does not warrant a true locker. I like that it is active all the time in finding traction, whether you are in 2wd, 4wd or 4low and does not require any engagement by the driver. Does a much better job and managing tire slip in the rain on the street than the 'simulated electronic LSD', or clutch pack style LSDs, and does an excellent job in finding traction off road all while being transparent to the driver. Another advantage is 4wd on the street in the snow. People will have varying opinions on LSDs in the snow, but I'd rather have one than not. And I would not engage my locker in the snow unless I was stuck, but the truetrac manages to always find more traction.

Where can you buy a Detroit LSD for a Tacoma?

I would have gone with a True Trac if I knew of a reputable shop that could do the work but I have no regrets with my set-up.

Question......are most of you replacing the LSD Tru Trac on both front and rear diffs? I was planning on just replacing the rear diff? How much was the cost and labor? Its my understanding its a lot cheaper then a air locker such as ARB?

I would not hesitate to recommendation Detroit in the rear.
If you need a locker in the front, I think you should go selectable...as the front DS is always rotating.

    Things and stuff and such
ARB is the only option for the front on 2nd gen's

You will pay less if you can pull the diffs and take them to a professional for setup. The rear is easy if you know how to turn a wrench, front is more complicated.

Thanks all for the advice. I don't do any rock crawling, but do enough off roading or overlanding that might justify a LSD. I'm going with Eaton Detroit TruTrac Locker on the rear diff.

I dont see a location of where you are but I have the Detroit truetrac in the rear of my DCLB.

My review is going to be positive with a warning.

    1. offroad traction greatly increased as both wheels are very very positive drive. if your foot is on the throttle its very hard to not have both wheels turning. If you have the AUTO LSD engaged it will actually try and apply the brakes for you and you really do realize how sad the original LSD system is.
    2. Winter driving can be very sketchy but also you do have both rear wheels driving you. If you hit the throttle without the traction control you WILL go sideways which is both very fun and very dangerous if you cant control it.
3.What I couldn't do in 2wd before I find fairly easy now, I engage 4wd less and use it for those really hard sections

If you want better traction but dont want a locker then this is by far the best upgrade I could imagine doing. Keep in mind that toyota made a basic LSD that might be more tame but less positive in early years. If you have A-trac I would suggest detroits front and rear.

In canada it cost me 600 for the LSD and 500 to have it installed at Big Country Customs in Surrey BC.

As for the front... I am working on a much better basic upgrade for the people looking for better traction without the major cost of an arb. There is a detroit truetrac for the front as well though. If I dont succeed at the test then I will be deciding between the Eaton Detroit truetrac and arb locker.

Sweet, I've been wanting to do this for a few years now...
I need it a couple times each year and that will go up as I get braver and braver, open axles don't cut it....

    Sounds like a good mod....
