Used the Christmas gift for the first time today on a small spinning reel. These reels are a nightmare in terms of the number of screws, this sucker makes a WORLD of difference. Love the gyroscopic control, so intuitive.

I just bought 2 5ah batteries, just in case. And then today a friend gave me one he found in his garage after some workers left. Thanks. I'm using them with the adapter to 18volt tool collection. I really need to get a new hammer drill...the original with the big tool set died a few years ago, out of warranty.

Just picked up a power station off FB marketplace for more than 50% off retail. Plan to use it for powering a TV during football tailgates.

I reached out to DeWalt asking if they were planning to release an updated model soon, since Milwaukee just updated theirs, but they said they have no current plans.

So, not sure if there's many solutions to this, but I figure I'll ask. I have some old 18V DeWalt stuff that is all still in really good condition. Well, they no longer make the batteries and luck would have it my 18V XRP batteries dated 9/17 are pretty much done for. I do not want to get the 20v to 18v conversion as the setup cost just as much as a new drill/impact set. That and it makes everything too bulky. Am I just destined to get a new drill/impact/hammer drill?

Chinese adapters to use 20v batteries on 18v tools are less than $15 on ebay. I've bought several. They do add some bulk, but oh well.

The only down side to the ones that I have is that they have some parasitic drain, probably because they come with a USB port to use for accessory power. I can't leave batteries in drills.

Why not get a couple of Dewalt 18v to 20v adapters?

I have 2 of them (Dewalt, not copies) and they work just fine. Just don't leave the battery in the adapter when you are not using it - the new electronics in the adapter will slowly drain the battery.

We have several of those adapters on impacts at work and I do not like the extra bulk at all. I know, sounds like I'm nit-picking

Guess I'm stuck getting new 20v stuff...

I picked up this DCH133B hammer drill at Home Depot Saturday for $169. I’ve been watching it for over a year and a half. Always been $229. Discount was perfectly timed.. I just happened to have some HD Birthday gift cards in my pocket. (Checked yesterday.. $249 at Lowes)

Kids gave me this at Christmas. Really enjoying having it in my shop.. (yes I’m addicted to DeWalt and everyone knows. I got DeWalt socks for my birthday last week!).

Same, just did the 18V-20V adapter this year as well. Works well for me.

I don't mind the bulk just for home use. I could see the annoyance of it if I used it for work with every tool.

it is also very simple to take the 18V battery pack apart and replace the individual cells. I'm still using some old NiMH drills by doing this.

But that's not as exciting as getting a new drill.

Love my 20V Angle grinder. With low cost (but good) cutting discs cuts hog wire and even re-bar nicely.

I also resisted the switch to 20v from 18. I gotta say, the brushless impact and the doesn’t-exist-in-18v oscillating tool (among many others) make it totally worth the switch.

For those that don't know. 20v is 18v. DeWalt just measures the nominal voltage at full charge to claim 20v. Go measure a fully charged 18v battery. Yep. It shows 20v. They actually lost a court battle in Europe and have to call them 18v over there even though it's the newer slide in battery pack. lol

That said, the 20v line is absolutely worth switching over too. Better battery life, better power in all the tools and the fast chargers blow the old drop in 18v out of the water.

@Delta09 Make the switch. You can probably fleabay your old tools to recoup some cost.

Europe’s courts are much different than here.

Makita actually invented the 18v battery line, but Milwaukee was the first to patten it. Every tool battery company that was making tools on 18v batteries paid Milwaukee royalties.

Thus the 20v max. S/B&D’s mostly likely attempt to avoid royalties.

That said, the official statement Dewalt made was the the 20v max was made to avoid confusion of product compatibility between the 18v stick and the newer current slide on batteries as at one point they use to share the shelf some years ago.

Well, same voltage, but some subtle differences. Almost all the 20v ones have a gauge; none of the 18s did. 20s are all lithium-based; only some of the 18s were. You've got a lot more choices in terms of capacity in the newer 20s. If I remember right (maybe someone can set me straight if I'm wrong), the 20s are lighter than a lithium-ion 18 of the same Ah capacity.

Then you get to the 60 volt options, and the range of tools that are available on the 20/60v platforms, and and and... 20v is better!
