I've used the 20V 5AH in it for camping and the battery lasts for about two nights. Wife must have a fan regardless of temps.

Amazing!!! I’ll keep an eye out for it on sale because it seems way more efficient than batteries. Plus I always keep my dewaly impact in the truck so it’s convenient

Been thinking about picking up a couple of the 60v flex volt batteries for my 20v tools. Worth it?

I have two of them. I mainly bought them for the blower and makes a difference. For hand tools like drills they're too big and heavy for my liking.

Milwaukee owns the intellectual property of the 18v nominal battery packs used in power tools. So...the rights. They’ve reached settlements with a handful of companies, and makita and dewalt just pay the royalties worked out in-house between Hilti, Stanley black and decker aka dewalt, and what I’m assuming is would be TTI.

    This is common knowledge.

    https://amp.jsonline.com/amp/805035001

    Etc

i didn’t respond to the OP because it will only become an argument that I don’t care to start or finish. I’m not a “tool guy.”

Those patents seem to be related to the construction and control of the pack. Not generically to all 18v Li-Ion packs. Though it’s common for companies to hash these things out without the court particularly if both sides benefit from sharing patients.

I find it interesting that in all the patents they describe a 5s battery pack as “nominally” 21v. It’s interesting because everyone bitches about Dewalt marketing their batteries as 20v while most others use 18v to describe the same 5s battery.

I have the 20v max xr 1/4" impact, 1/2" drill and jigsaw, great upgrades from my ten year old cheap black and decker drill. I'm trying to justify a 1/2" hammer drill/impact to double as an ice fishing auger drill.

Thanks for not plugging the thread up, I understand. I was mostly curious on the cost adder not so much the details on the tech patent

Go team yellow! I will put together a list of the ones I have sometime. I do have Milwaukee 12v stuff too, but was never a huge fan of their 18v stuff.

Oh, it was related to my comparison to Lowe’s.

I just got a battery pack with (1) 6 ah and (1) 4 ah battery..it was $299...and I got a free tool from the holiday deal going on...I had a $100 gift card, plus the chick gave me a mil discount. I pay’ed $96 and I got the last one. It was a good deal, but it’s a limited thing. I would never buy dewalt batteries for $300 and I didn’t “need” the free tool, but it definitely looks like it will be handy!

Meanwhile, on any day of the week, I can go to Lowe’s and get a 6 ah battery for $99. A regular 6 ah battery from dewalt is $129 and two 5 ah batteries and charger are $200 while the kobalt is $150 for two 4 ah batteries with charger, and it seems they all work about as good...which still is not as good as Milwaukee. Lowe’s also has sales. Lol.

I “think” that they can only sell the batteries so cheap because of this patent right here:

    https://patents.google.com/patent/US20080012530A1/en

Which covers pretty much all 18v Li-ion batteries used in power tools, in which “I think” they ( tool companies) pay a little over a mil every year.

Another interesting thing is its almost the same price to get (2) 6 ah flexvolt batteries compared to (2) 6 ah xr batteries. I get the flexvolt’s being priced where they are, but the 20v max...for what you’re getting..idk. Just my opinion. If you’re not aware of the competition, then i could understand the confusion of my point, but you can get some good performance out of 18v Milwaukee tools.

The reason I started with the Dewalt brand was because of the 18V cordless grinder/cutoff saw. I was at a junkyard in 1994 and wanted a spare tire and wheel that I had my eyes on that would match my Bronco. It was locked onto a rear bumper mount with a padlock. I was turning away when some random dude with a cordless cutoff saw asked me if I wanted the tire. I said yes but it is locked on. He said no problem and cut the lock off in seconds and walked away like a hero.

It was then that I knew I had to have one. At the time the tool alone was $350 which was way out of my budget but one day I was at Lowes and the gods spoke to me. There was a return with only 50% of the tools. It included the cutoff saw, two batteries (nicad back then), a 1/2" impact driver, charger and a large bag at 80% off.

I still have all those tools today (in the 18V pic above) except the bag I threw out and they all work as well as they did then. I replaced the batteries with Lion ones when they came out.

I prefer Dewalt for cordless and own quite a few.
Impact driver, compact drill, hammer drill, sawzall and circular saw. Next will be either a trim nailer or a 1/2 impact.

I know 100% that any patent payments are not included in the consideration for determining retail prices. Most of the retail prices are set by the retailer. Home Depot has a huge investment in Milwaukee and they actively block out others from competing directly with them.

Edit: also that patent is related to the construction of the battery pack and is specific to 28v and 9.6v packs. Not generically to all Li packs.

I forgot to mention my wife gave me the 20V Grease gun for Christmas. I was keeping it in the cardboard box (lame!!) Yesterday I scored a DeWalt decently larger (28") poly tool box with tray! GREAT box for the gun and accessories and even several tubes of grease in the tray. I was going to buy a cloth type bag but this box seems like a nice way to isolate a slimy tool.

Are there any deals, or just who has the best price on the 20V 8Ah packs? I want to buy just one or two. My 4's are great, but want the oomph and RT of 8Ah
