So I have a 2020 Tacoma that has a bad direct injector in cylinder #6. Took it to a shop to get diagnosed and they wanted to charge 3,750 to do all new DI injectors. So I figured I’d do it myself and only replace the one that’s bad. Having a hard time figuring exactly where they are at. I pulled the intake off and the port injectors are right there but it seems the direct ones are underneath there somewhere. Do I need to pull the port injectors too to get to the DI ones. Or what’s the best way to access them

Are you sure it is a bad injector? It could be something as simple as an ignition coil. Have you done a compression test on cylinder no. 6?

The Car Care Nut has a good overview of replacing Toyota DI injectors. Maybe not this specific vehicle but there are nuances he talks about that are worth noting. For example it's not just matching the part number. There are other codes on the DI itself to consider

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Here's a page/picture of where the DI lives in relation to Port. Source file attached as well.

Injectors take a special tool or at least something to get the seal position correct. I have never done these and they look like a pita to do diy in your garage. Make sure you blead down high pressure fuel rail before disassembly. Fuel at 1k+ psi is no bueno.

Compression is good all around. Haven’t tried ignition coil cause the shop told me it was injectors and this guy is usually right. I’m getting fuel and air imbalance and rich codes like po175 and a few others too. So how do I blead down the high pressure fuel rail? Thanks for the input

Imbalance codes are pretty much always a burnt exhaust valve on this engine. Rare for it to be cylinder 6 though; it's cylinder 1 or 3 much of the time. P11F1 code?

Any idea what causes the burnt valve?

Don’t waste your time on the DI, start looking for exhaust valve burnt. So far, that has been the cause 100% of the time on these imbalance codes that have been posted on the site. The fix is typically a new cylinder head and new exhaust valves on the affected cylinder.

Ok I’ll look for that, what does a burnt valve look like

I think it would fail a compression test

Normally it won’t pass a compression check if valve is burnt. You might double check that compression is good especially compared to the other cylinders. Thinking about it, since cylinder 6 is not one of the cylinders that typically has a failed exhaust valve occur, you might get lucky and it be the direct injector o-ring or something.

I wouldn’t just replace the direct injector though, that seems unlikely to be the problem. Or I at least wouldn’t start with that.

The cause is not really known. Failures have occured pretty much everywhere on the mileage map. Some at 40K or 50K, some at 80K, some at 200K. Some think it is a manufacturing defect, but I don't know how it would make it as long as it does without problem and then finally become a problem one day if it was a defect. The more odd part is that it typically shows up only on cylinder 1 or 3, and there have been a few outliers that it pops up on cylinder 2. There have been maybe 1 or 2 cases documented on the forum for the other 3 cylinders, they are far more rare for this problem. The fact that it seems to repeatedly happen in the same few cylinders makes me think it's a design flaw that is just bad enough to only affect some. I really don't know and neither does anyone else. It isn't common enough for Toyota to do anything about it at this point, other than repair the ones under warranty still with a new head and a couple of new valves. There has never been a truly documented fix, it's just replacing the stock parts with more of the same.

I’ve replaced air fuel ratio sensor and had port injectors cleaned and tested. That took care of my misfire code but still have imbalance ones. I bought this truck with these issues and kinda thinking the guy put some bad fuel into it at some point

If you decide to replace DI injector, you need to take fuel delivery pipe

OP said compression is good on all cylinders if burnt valve shouldn’t one or more have low compression?

OP, code P11F1 = Toyota's code P11F100 and referring to Port side

    P017500 Code

    upload_2024-7-12_10-59-49.png

Please note. you have to troubleshoot other codes before P017500.
So do a proper leakdown test to rule out the burnt valve. What are compression #s from the test you had?
