So I have a diamondback cover that's coming in soon (03/16/2021!) and I wanted some insight if anyone has looked into just slapping a ground tent on top of these awesome covers :d

Splurged a little on the cover so I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for a ground tent that I can somehow secure to my truck. Or if anyone can direct me to a forum - I'm still a noob at this website.

But thanks in advance! Glad to be a part of this awesome group.

Why not just use a ground tent on the ground like it is meant to be used??? You can actually get one with room to stand up in too.

I knew someone would have an answer. Yeah I’ve noticed most tents just shy out of the dimensions of the Tacoma short bed about a feet and some change. The plywood seems like a good idea to make up for that distance. Did you cut the plywood down in a certain manner so you’re better able to transport the plywood.
Thanks again for taking the time!

What size is your truck bed, or more specifically, the dimensions of the Diamondback cover? Are you that sure you want to sleep on that? You’ll need padding enough to bypass the hinges and lock mechanisms without feeling a nights sleep for the entirety of tomorrow. Don’t get me wrong I’d like to try it to experiment as it’s a good way to stay away from the critters. Though it seems too uncomfortable when a hub or pop up style tent will equally do the trick. Hammocks are also great too for staying off the ground without the burden of rooftop tents and accessories! There are solo swags made by Kodiak that may work as well with the DB. You’ll have to consider guy lines as well and potential hazard in camp.

Hello, thanks for the reply and also good points! I just realized with the plywood there would have to be some cutouts because of the hinges on the cover itself and then it also has the tiedown anchors. I was unable to find the dimensions of the cover itself but it sits right on top of the short bed and the dimensions for my bed is roughly:

    60.5/41.5/19.1 inches (LxWxH)

But I will also look into those other options you mentioned and I like the guy lines! Thanks for that one.

These should be the dimensions for a short bed (5ft) SE cover for a 2019. This probably factors the slant on all edges that isn’t a usable surface area.

    Overall Length: 64.125"
    Overall Width at Cab: 63.5"
    Overall Width at Tail: 61"

Guy lines and counterweight will be you only deterrent against high winds and being up that high you’ll want them cinched them down tight.

If you had the ideal sized tent with the right about of buffer space and cutouts for your base, I’d imagine you could be pretty comfortable up there. Bonus points if you can setup and tear down quickly.

Has anyone gone through on this yet? I have a long bed and was thinking of going the shell route, but then I was out cutting trees today and realized how useless a shell would be 98% of the time for my real needs. I currently have a trifold OEM vinyl cover, but would love to get a diamondback. Pitching a tent on it would be a plus.
