I swear they either get designers/sales people involved who came from the cars division, or who have never set foot inside a truck and use it as such. How many guys have we seen modify back decks for dogs, hunting, camping, etc. before they put that stupid thing in there? And they take it the wrong direction.

Past reputation, handy, stalwart guys, and lots of aftermarket goodies; this is what keeps Toyota afloat in this niche. Toyota is becoming the Microsoft of mid-size trucks. Fuck.

You know, I looked at that utility option on a 2016, where they delete the backseats in the AC ... it did not look as useable as the platform created flipping my seats fwd in my 07; which is how they stay 98% of the time. That said, the half dozen times I've carried people back there, it's nice to have that option too when necessary. Yep, I'll never get why they went that way.

Yeah. Basically tear out the plastic crap bins and do something else that doesn't waste as much space, for tool kits, recovery or other items, survival stuff, something to attach some Quickfists to, perhaps. Anything that won't fit in the underseat bins...which is quite a lot. I like Ding's idea so far for a basic, or at least short-term, approach. We were discussing this a page or so back.

So the glare rendering the head unit useless and downright distracting and dangerous in certain conditions is at the top of list of annoyances for DD.

I've been scouring GPS, tablet, ipad and any kind of glare shield hood I can think of, and nothing seems to come in dimensions that will fit wither inside outside of the peripheral knobs/buttons.

So then last night I thought What can I at least start playing with and mocking up?

    Two things came to mind:
    1. vinyl-backed paperboard used for document covers (such as you may find at Kinkos). I mocked this up on lunch break today, can be whittled down and tested using only scissors. This clearly sticks out too much and the side angles are off, just a starting point. This was from 8.5x11 stock. I also got some 11x17 stock which will allow (a) continual coverage from the bottom corners of both sides of the display and (b) a mockup extending from the very top of the black plastic console trim and completely encompassing all knobs and buttons. I'll play with that this weekend.

    2. Poly (plastic) folders or binder material for a more durable, yet still flexible (and impact safe) material. I will pick some up this weekend for the next level of spearmints and possibly a working prototype.

Attachment for the small version can be accomplished by applying narrowly cut adhesive-backed velcro strips along the protruding surround of the display housing.

For the larger version, I'll see if it will jam in the crevices of the moldings (between silver and black). Once I have one rough cut, I'll see how it wants to sit and what is possible. May need to keep extra edge material that can be folded in like tabs and also use velcro attachments.

LOL. For the immediate future it just needs to not kill me. The funny thing is that today, I heard two people discussing how lame their units are, no idea what vehicles, in particular glare, and on of my friend recently bought a new Acura whatever SUV, and she said that system sucks too.

Yay technology. I just don't understand how they can be this lame given today's smartphone technology and power. This is commodity shit, people!

Not to be overly direct.. because that's what dicks do. But, could you make it, somehow, less ugly/old geezer looking?

Maybe just toss a sticker on it that's all. Like Monster Energy Drink.

    In the interim. You know.

Smart. Really, I am looking forward to the day when there is basically a universal docking port for tablet-style devices that can tap into an out-of-sight ECU/CPU. Whoever develops this concept will make a killing.

Congrats on the new addition(s) to the family, particularly the biological one.

The Konig's are a classic, good choice.

Yeah. This truck came off the truck with the package. There wasn't going to be any ordering, 2015 production was closing out, and I needed a truck, like, now, so I figured it will be fine for the short term. Just had no idea how viscerally angry it would make me.
Thanks, man. I've always liked the Countersteers. I think I'll have to get through the holidays and winter with the wheels I have and pull the trigger in the spring.

I edited my first few posts to get better organized.

Working on the cap today. Main door seal is leaking, I knew it would, because the top middle was loose from some moron tucking wires in behind it at some point. Drips in the bed, and damp roof liner. I was just waiting for rain to see how bad. Need to check out the 3rd brake light housing too and make sure nothing is going on there. Also got some stuff to fix the disintegrating little rubber flaps at either rear corner of the door, just above the tailgate. The Chinese flap seal arrived, too. They sent the wrong one. Odd, since there was only one type listed and no other options. It may still work. Currently arguing in ebay messages, but my Cantonese is limited. I'll post pics later I hope. Today is "my day" this weekend, need to get a ton of stuff done before dark and before the rain tomorrow. So, later...
