Did anyone in the East see the huge meteor?

I just got home and while driving, everything lit up as bright as day and looked up and there was a meteor. Just curious if anyone else saw it. It was about 11:30 PM eastern. It reminded me of the one in Russia, but it didn't hit close enough to hear it.

Edit* Rich corrected me. Wasn't close enough to hear it explode when reaching the atmosphere. Some reports of people have heard a delayed boom though.

I think I'm a little too far south (GA), but I've always wanted to see something like that.

 

Haven't heard anything yet. It scared the crap out of me at first. Good thing no one was behind me because I slammed on my brakes. lol

 

I have a feeling it was big enough to be seen everywhere in West Virginia, but not big enough to be seen passed neighboring states.

 

If there were one big enough to see from WV and GA, we wouldn't be here talking about it lol. Still, I bet the one you saw was badass. I'm a huge astronomy/outer-space nut, but I haven't spotted any meteors above average size

The one in Russia was seen from miles and miles, but not WV to GA amount of miles. Lol. But I love that stuff too and I never would've thought I would see anything like that in my life. It literally looked like mid-day with the sun out, but a little blue.

 

These things burn so high up in the sky that they can be easily seen across many states, both due to the pure altitude, as well as the flight path.

When I was a kid, we were on vacation in New Mexico and the sky lit up like daytime on the northern horizon. We snagged a paper the next day and the thing was observed from all of the western states, the path took it over central Utah and southwest... went into the ocean hundreds of miles off the coast of California north of LA.

And OP... the explosion heard in Russia was just that... an airburst when the thing exploded from the heat of entering the atmosphere. You would not hear the impact unless you were right on top of it, unless it is something large enough to leave a significant crater (extreeeemely rare event).

These fireballs happen dozens of times a day, but most are over water.

 

Oh, okay. Well I'm surprised I didn't hear it. Hopefully I'll see something in the news tomorrow about it. That thing was probably once in a life time for me.

Edit: It's old. The video was apparently posted today, but the sighting was on the 21st. Cop in Canada.

Thats why you have a dashcam people. I see the craziest things when im out driving or on my bike but never have time to pull out my phone

Saw a report on the national news. They said no impact crater had been found.

 

Yeah, it looks like it burned up before hitting anything.
