If it makes you feel any better the truck i bought had the exact same looking fluid basically. little over 200k on the truck. I just did a drain/refill on it. have yet to drop the pan Iam going to run the new fluid awhile then drain it again and this time drop the pan to check the magnets and filter. I had some tiny metal shavings as well but nothing large. Trans shifts just as smooth as butter, and did even with the dirty fluid. Im pretty sure these A340s are pretty solid, at least with no fluid changes they seem to hold up pretty darn well... Just throwing my recent experience out there. :)

OP you and I sound alike. I'm paranoid too.

The transmission in my 02 had fluid darker than that. It was pitch black. I did a few drain/fills and put a new filter in. Almost 100k miles later and my trans is strong. As others have said, you're good to go.

I actually got it from a scrapper up in Reno.

Just gotta collect a few more things and I'm ready to do the swap.

Which scrap yard if you don't mind mentioning your source? If I can help ya out from reno, give me a holler.

I see you're out in the bay. I work in sac every weekend so I could probably run the new/used trans back if it shits the bed... which it won't.

They have like 10-15 Tacomas here at any given time. It's crazy. Ton of 4Runners too. It's a full service yard, just tell them what part you need and they'll get it for you.

looks like the same "transmissions" used for both I4 and V6, bell housings being the difference due to bolt patterns. E and F are still different output shafts (Pre or 4w)

    Agreed - I used the transmission out of a 3.4L 99 4Runner in my 2.7L 98 Tacoma - reusing the 2.7L bellhousing..

Also keep in mind the A340 was used on the 4.0 during the first two years of the 4th Gen 4Runner, before switching out to the 5-speed A750 in '05 (2nd Gen Taco, 1st GenTundra/Sequoia). But I doubt you can retro-fit an A750 to the 3.4 :(

So the A340F for the Tacoma was identical besides the bellhousings between the 3.4l and the 2.7l?

Sounds like you'll have a backup trans for parts Tyler. Output shaft is different though.

    I guess so!

I don't think any of the write-ups I've come across has talked about the differences between the 3.4l and 2.7l bellhousings. Good thing the truck I got the trans. from was a '99 2.7l

Did you use the A340F torque converter or the A340E? Is it filled properly with ATF?

When I bought my truck I changed the transmission fluid and it looked about that dark. I ended up changing the filter thing and doing a drain and fill. That was 110,000 miles ago. No problems so far.

Edit:just noticed the original post date. How's it holding up so far?
