Hey OP I feel for you. The first time I changed the oil in my 08 Tacoma I opened the tranny plug by mistake also. The liquid was red and I reinserted the plug as fast as I could. I lost about an eighth of a quart. I looked all around the engine searching for a dipstick and a tranny fill port with no luck. Read through the manual, also no luck. I went to the dealer as soon as I could and asked about dipstick and refill of tran fluid. They said neither of those is on the truck. The tran fluid is a sealed unit, you can drain it but the fluid is heated and injected in with a type of grease gun ( for lack of better description).
To make a long story forever, I had dealer drain and inject new tran fluid to proper level.
Seriously! I hope all works out ok for your truck!

+1, I have done many oil changes and trans fluid changes. I go under the truck from front for oil and side for tranny. Oil pan sits under the engine and trans pan is behind the bell housing. I just do not get it.

Hence my reasoning that this thread has been a colossal troll job and the responders have been duped.

    DIY or dealer only.
The V6 uses Toyota WS fluid and a lot of independent shops aren't always up on it.
Had an indy put Dex-III in my wife's '00 Echo that took T-IV.

Sharing the mistake takes more character than the one criticizing it. You have probably saved others the same fate by bringing this to light as a possibility. :)

i didnt think the oil pan on my truck was that small. finding the oil pan is second nature to me, after going to college for 2 years to be an automotive tech.

Or mark oil nut some how, reading the dip stick is hard enough. Ive heard and seen a lot of people had this happen to them. But most of them hardly did their own maintenance :(

You would figure that but just by looking under the tacoma, I can see the mix up. Same color pan, same eye level, similar bolts, and close together. Small oil pan size doesn't help either. First time I did my oil change, I Googled a 2nd gen oil pan pic to confirm. I wonder how often this happens to those that take their trucks to a local Jiffy lube?

Or put the drain on the back of the pan like GM.

I will say this when I did my first oil change I was thinking that cant be the pan that lil bitty thing. And I crawled around and saw the trans drain. And said well that has to be it.
