Did I get any water into my differential??

    Went offroading a few weeks ago and ran into some trouble but still had a blast.

    I do not have a diff. breather extender and I am wondering how easy it really is to actually suck water into the differential and looking to see some people opinions on whether or not I may have caused any problems from my recent encounter with water and mud. Thanks

    That looks like alot of fun...

    I would just change the fluid to be on the safe side...its easy and will cause you less headache and $$$ in the long run

    Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
    You can check for water without completely draining it. Just slowly unscrew the drain plug until it starts leaking. Milky oil, it's got water. Plain water,:eek:, drain, flush, and refill.
    Make sure you crack the fill plug before you mess with the drain plug!

    Also, if you've never opened your rear dif, listen for a 'gasp' if you have pressure built up and exiting when you unskrew either the fill cap or the stock breather, then your breather wasn't working right in the first place. Do the breather mod - I just did mine. Worth the 30 minutes and 5$ so you don't trash 30$+ worth of oil every other weekend :) (nice pics btw)

    Did you run yours to your gas door? That portion doesn't make any sense to me as water does get in there during heavy rains... so why you would route the hose there doesn't make sense. i'm thinking i'll go somewhere in the wheel well that's out of waters reach, but havent had much time to re-route yet.

    Milky is the operative word here. Foam is another problem entirely.
    As the diff spins it mixes in air. Old oil or hard running will cause this. The air should settle out quickly.
    Milky oil is caused by the water being emulsified in the oil. That's the oil doing its job. It keeps the water away from the metal. Over time (or too much water) the water will separate. The viscosity also decreases. Water, emulsified or not, will cause rust, or burn out bearings because of poor lubrication. Excessive air will cause the same problems, but it is a separate problem.
    Some people run the breather to the cubby over the wheel well. It is protected from hard rain and higher than the rear storage cubby(which might get flooded by a creek crossing).

    I spent about 8 hours on it and it is still not completely back to the way it was.. my interior got murdered. not to mention how rusty everything underneath got. STILL well worth it though, can't wait to do it again, I don't plan on getting stuck that badly though

    It was actually in iowa right by the Missouri river
