I stay confused...heh heh. I think I understand. Ben, you're saying that as far as the gear boxes and the gears in the tranny are concerned the GL-5 is ok but it has been found that long term the additives added to the lube to meet the GL-5 specifications will eat away at the brass synchronizers in the manual trans.? I don't understand them listing that oil type as the type required then. But then again it's usually the mechanics that find this stuff out long term and not the engineers (not meant to be a knock on anyone).

Since I used Lucas, I'll probably leave it be for now. Thanks a bunch for all the info. I love learning new stuff........

Tranny should be GL-4, everything else is GL-5. Your Lucas should be fine as it is a synthetic.

How DARE you not be at my beckoned call...heh heh. I think I understand what Ben's saying but I'm still not 100% sure that what I used is ok or not. I didn't use Lucas synthetic. Just the standard Lucas gear oil. It's rated to "exceed GL-4 and GL-5" requirements but from what Ben has said the GL-5 additive may be detrimental long term. Long term is an issue as I want to give this truck to my son in about 8 more years ;o).

I know, I know....if I'm worried just shut up, drain the stuff and put in what I'm convinced is the "right" stuff. That's the thing...at this point I'm not exactly sure what the "right" stuff IS for the manual transmission.

Well, it's been a few weeks and thought I'd give an update. 98tacoma, you were right...I can really tell a difference in the shifting now that it has started to really cool off outside. Much stiffer with the 80w grease. I am going to get (as the manual says) some 75w oil to use in the tranny. I'll make sure to get the GL-4 too. Like I said, this job on all the diffs, transfer case, and tranny went really well and wasn't hard at all. Just should no have used the 80w in the tranny GL-5 stuff in the tranny.
