The highest recorded accounts of 05-06 head gasket failures is here on Tacomaworld. The overall percentage of failure has to be very small.
My 1990 pickup was running strong at 175K when it was totaled. I bought it new, did all the service work myself. This well taken care of truck would have gone 300K. I expect my rust free 2005 Tacoma that has been well taken care of to do the same. If the head gaskets fail, I'll fix it.
With the stuff I see people towing with Tacomas, I bet head gasket failure is not unusual in later models.

guessing yours is a V6 if it's a DC? not sure if they both (theoretically) have head gasket problems, but I just bought a 2005 4cyl AC with 192k miles...probably the cleanest 100k+ miles used cars I've ever seen, with no signs (that I knew of) of impending HG failure. Less than a week into owning it...misfires, gunk on the oil cap, white 'smoke'. 99% sure it's the head gasket. I think it's basically bad luck, and fortunately, the dealer seems willing to work with me to make it right, but it does happen!

on the other hand, I hope I can just get this one fixed (ideally with a low mile used OEM engine swap, but just HG would be fine with me if the block/head are still good) since it's got a new frame and is otherwise in great shape for the age, and I don't really want to try to find another one in the current market.

As much as I want a Platinum Tundra, I don’t really enjoy having payments. Plan on paying off balance of the truck this August, I’ve never paid off a truck in the 20 years of vehicle ownership, always trade it in 1 year before I pay it off and get myself another payment...I know I know...bad decision...starting to realize things now that I’m getting older lol!

Luckily for us, our Taco’s hold their value, trucks only got about 137,000km/85,000 miles on it. :)

Not only that, I don’t feel like starting another project from scratch, 4.5 years into this truck and still love it! Just want that supercharger LOL!

they hold value really well. thinking about selling mine, but trying to figure out a good price.

2013 Trd sport, clean title, MGM, 102k miles, second owner, double cab short bed, auto V6, 4x2, pretty much stock except 285/70/17 nitto ridge grapplers, trd pro grille, predator steps, its super clean. no rust. I've had it since July 4th, 2019. had 91k miles when i got it.

I tallied up all the mods I've done to mine, even considering the heck of a deals I've gotten with most everything, I'd need at least 30k to consider parting with mine.

That's a perspective, doesn't mean its accurate across the board. What @JdevTac said is probably the most consistent view people from all over are having in general. In my region it really is premarily used tacoma's, tundra's, 4runners and jeeps that have spiked. Not being able to travel abroad has caused many folks to reconsider how they vacation and when you're forced to do it domestically, getting a more capable vehicles helps accomplish that. I saw more travel campers, rv's, roof racks, RTT's, boats on the road this summer than ever. Like double.

This does make me think about selling my 2006 TRD with 200k miles.

FYI I ended up paying 26,400 for my 2015 with 85,000 miles I have never ever over my 55 years of buying and selling got out much from the add on's I Wanted and put on. Tires, brakes and the like yes but things I thought were cool, never.

Prices have spiked a bit here in Arizona. Not quite enough to balance the scale of what you put into it though.
I paid $26,000 for my 2015 sport with 50,000 miles on it. After a supercharger, and various small mods. I’ve got $40,000 and 66,000 miles on it. I very much doubt I could get more than $32,000 for it. And this small spike is bound to level out soon...

    "STOCK"..... ;)
    This summer I bought my 2014 for $16k w/ 102k miles, 4.0L, 4WD + 6Spd. I love this damn thing!
Of course I put my "freebie" 2020 TRD Pros and UCAs on and it's a whole new truck.

Been offered 20k+ at least twice. The key would be finding the right motivated buyer that thinks it's worth it.

I’m having a hard time finding an accurate value for my 2012. I need a bigger truck for towing so I have to sell. First year black BAJA access cab, 66k miles, one owner. Only “issue” is a flashing A/C light. What should I be asking or realistically expect to get?99DB3F07-161E-4E77-847F-BA8B4C82A62C.jpg99DB3F07-161E-4E77-847F-BA8B4C82A62C.jpg C375F8D9-0FAB-4EA1-869C-F1C79A63995D.jpg38B6E996-39AF-47CC-A465-882EB6C41834.jpg

Toyota sells a quarter million 3rd gens per year. That's 70,000-100,000 more per year than 2nd gens ever did new.

The reason for 2nd gen's residual value is attrition - more and more of them sent to the crusher each year due to rust or collision.

Probably a failed compressor clutch. Get an estimate for that. Might be better to fix it prior to sale. Look at your local listings for comparable year & mileage TRD Off Road trucks, add maybe 30% of the cost of the supercharger.

Just sold mine, 2006 with 146,000 miles for $16,000. Lite hail damage, most of it was on the hood. Wouldn't pull my trailer, as much as I wanted it too, most of the towing was above 7000 ft., so I needed to move somewhere flat and at see level. Nope. I'm not going to ditch the trailer as much as I liked the truck. Tried talking my wife into getting rid of her car, since she works from home and never drives, but she wasn't having any of it. Wife says the Tacoma was more comfortable than the new truck, but the new truck doesn't know the trailers back there, so I guess I accomplished the goal, miss the Tacoma though.upload_2020-12-13_9-7-56.jpg

Weird stat isn't that? Just when tacoma's start to loose their reliability again they sell 40% more.

Mine has been perfectly reliable so far, which is better than what I can say for the 2010 TRD OR it replaced. :notsure:

The stats, reviews, recalls etc etc on 16’s and 17’s are horrible. Starts to get a bit better again after that. Same can be said for 05’s to 09’s and then 10’s - 15’s see things more consistently great again. This is obviously generally speaking on a large scale. What year is yours now?
